Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.

Remarks: red drum are an INSHORE species until they attain roughly 30 inches (4 years), then they migrate to join the NEARSHORE population; spawning occurs from August to November in NEARSHORE waters; sudden cold snaps may kill red drum in shallow, INSHORE waters; feeds on crustaceans, fish and mollusks; longevity to 20 years or more.
There are shallow flats, and miles of peaceful back-country which are the breeding grounds of most game fish. You can target schools of Redfish roaming the flats, Trout feeding in the miles of healthy sea grass, Tarpon Rolling along the bridges and passes throughout the bay, or Snook lying in the miles of undeveloped Mangroves lining Tampa Bay.
There’s nothing as rewarding and relaxing as spending a day on the water in pursuit of fish. At Captain John O’Hanlon Fishing Expeditions, we have more than 30 years of experience in our field. No matter your experience level, we can take you on the fishing expedition of a lifetime.
The original bridge was destroyed when the freighter Summit Venture collided with a column of the bridge during a storm on May 9, 1980. In 1992, the center spans of the old bridge were demolished and the remaining sections on the Pinellas and Manatee county sides were converted into piers. The south Skyway pier is the longest fishing pier in the world.

Capt. Matt has not only put me on fish every time I have booked a charter – He got me my biggest tarpon ever 150+!!! He is the best Captain I have ever fished with and I recommend him highly. Always a great time and always finds the fish! -John Lashbrook
A charter includes fishing licenses, tackle, bait, ice, cold beverages and snacks to ensure a productive day on the water. Catch is cleaned and filleted free of charge. We do suggest all anglers bring a pair of polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and wear appropriate fishing attire.
As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf.
Although readily available year round, spring thru fall gives anglers the best chance to limit out on Snook. Their metabolism tends to slow down significantly during the cooler months. While they’ll still blast your plug every now and again, winter is typically better spent pursuing other species (see above!)
Awesome video! Damn dude, you really got me considering picking up a paddle board. I like the idea of having the higher vantage point. Most of the areas I fish in are so shallow and sometimes I feel like I’m spooking fish away before I have a chance to spot them. I always wondered how stable those paddle boards are. I weigh about 230 and don’t know how I’m going to avoid losing my balance if I hook a big ol’ snook. ha
Tampa Bay bridges produce year-round but the popularity increases as the thermometer rises. Fish and anglers beat the heat by sticking close to a bridge’s shaded waters. When thunderstorms threaten, a bridge is your umbrella and windbreak. No need to run back to port—just tuck behind the downwind side and ride out the blow.
Lower Tampa Bay around the Clam Bar on the Pinellas side is notorious for holding some monster black drum that begin moving into the bay over the next couple of months. Many of these breeders range up into the 50-plus pound bracket. Due to their size, stout rods and line are advised in order to land these beasts. Like the sheepshead, these fish will take a shrimp tipped jig. A bag limit of five fish per person between 14 and 24-inches may be kept and one of these five may be over 24-inches. Black drum over the maximum size begin holding more parasitic worms. While they may be harmless to ingest when cooked properly, some feel that they aren’t very appetizing. Boat docks in Sarasota Bay are great spots to find black drum as well.
Almost all of the area’s most popular species can be targeted on fly. This includes Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Sea Trout, Cobia and more. The water clears up significantly Fall thru Spring, allowing for an unparalleled sight fishing experience. While mainly an inshore activity, there’s no shortage of nearshore fly fishing opportunities either. Among others, Mackerel and Albacore are well known to take an inviting fly.
The extensive AA log of shows is diverse and quite unpredictable, From AA‘s sickness for spotted fish in “Spotted Fever” to using chicken wire shark cages in “Shark Island”, the over 200 episodes have brought colorful stories, high seas adventure and unique Florida history to the aqua-tube!
Nearshore fishing trips of St.Pete beach and Clearwater beach have been catching nice sized mackerel and schoolie sized kingfish. The random cobia have been showing up as well, and we still have some sharks in the area.

In Tampa Bay Tarpon fishing has been good for smaller tarpon in the 5-20lb range. Live bait has been what we have mainly been fishing with, but these are awesome fish for the 8 weight fly rod and a small popper fly. We have been also been catching mangrove snapper in the bay, and these fish are excellent table fair. While they are on smaller side (10”-16”) they are abundant and they do put up a decent fight for there size. The snapper bag limit is 5 fish per person. Black Drum have also made a good showing in the TampaBay and there have been a few schools with 100-500 fish in the school. The black drum are Huge and will really test your tackle.
Capt Steve hit the spots where the fish were. We probably caught about 30 fish total – trout, ladyfish, sheepshead etc… with 6 keepers. He does everything and is a very good captain. I Highly recommend his service, the trip was very enjoyable. I certainly…More

Incredible snook fishing has begun – Tampa Bay is fishing like a champ as water temps continue to climb higher. The snook bite is outrageous on high water right now. Soft plastics and live pilchards will get the job done. The fly fishing for snook is also fantastic. To learn about Tampa more…

Since one of my favorite things to do is explore new fishing areas, I thought it would be helpful to start publishing details about kayak and/or wade-friendly areas so those who don’t have a boat or are visiting from out of town can get a head start to finding easily accessible fishing grounds…
Another one of Florida’s staple game fish, this backcountry brawler thrives in virtually all parts of the Bay. The elusive Snook is caught anywhere from beaches to docks, mangroves, jetties and seawalls. Safe to say, it is uniquely flexible in finding itself a nourishing habitat.
