This awesome jerkbait by Rapala (the X-Rap series) is designed for optimal performance in the 3-8 feet depth range. Of course, if you know you will be fishing in shallow water (or if you need a hard lure to get down really low), you will need to try out a crankbait lure with a longer bill to get down deep.

• Laws: Consult local or Coast Guard authorities for special navigation rules applicable to bridges in your area. The U.S. Coast Guard has relaxed its post 9-11 regulations limiting boat proximity to bridges. Currently, a 100-foot security zone applies to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge’s center span, its pilings, dolphins and rock abutments. All other rules of navigation still apply, but anglers are allowed to fish elsewhere along the Skyway and other area bridges. FS
The hooks that are usually employed for saltwater application include the J hook, the live bait hook and the circle hook, each of which has its own specialized application. The J hook can either be a ‘baitholder’ with a few barbs on the shank or a standard J with a smooth shank. These are best for fishing with chunk or strip bait and allow you to hook the bait multiple times in order to keep it secure.
Stretching out at around 400 square miles, Tampa Bay is the largest open water estuary system in the state of Florida. It is also considered one of the world’s most productive natural ecosystems. This is due to the fact that this type of estuary is one where saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico and freshwater feeds from all along the coast mix. It is here where several species of gamefish, baitfish, and crustaceans spend their critical stages of development protected from larger open water predators.

Most pilings bear numbers for maintenance reference. Keep track of where you caught fish and note specific points such as piling design, compass directions and any particular markings such as ropes, graffiti or excessive pelican guano.

Winter Time Fishing is as Good as it Gets! – Last weeks cooler temperatures pushed a lot of the fish closer to their winter time hide outs. With winter time low tides, this typically means the fish are grouped tighter together, and once located we tend to catch a lot in one hole. White bait more…
Not only is fishing during the night convenient, it also makes sense. Most species are nocturnal and prefer to feed when the sun comes down. This rings especially true during the hottest months of the year.
Unlike the Skyway, which literally happened by accident, The Long Pier at Redington Shores was built in 1962 expressly to allow fishermen to catch more of the Gulf’s bounty than they could from shore. The 1,200-foot-long pier boasts a long history of significant catches, including tarpon, snook, redfish, kingfish, flounder, drum, trout, pompano, whiting and an occasional shark.
We have just got our first cold front here in Florida as I write this report. Earlier this week leading up to the front we had some outstanding fishing for reds, trout and snook! I fished with a few different groups, and had a couple multi boat charters with Capt. Mike Cole, and Capt.Ethan Kiburz. Fishing out of Clearwater beach for most of my charter trips we targeted all three species fishing live baits around islands and docks inshore. We caught several redfish, snook, and trout all on light tackle spinning rods with 15lb test line. Tampa bay fishing was really good as well as we did a few days targeting snook in the back country waters in the bay to avoid the windy weather. Here’s some of the pic’s from this past week’s fishing trips.
