Debris from the old bridge was put in the water to form a reef. Because it was a bridge, both piers sit high above the water. It makes for spectacular views not only of the deep blue water, but of the new Skyway bridge just to the east.

It is prime time for catching quality trout, our most abundant fish, pretty cooperative and easy to catch most of the time. Make long casts and move lures slowly to connect with big Tampa Bay trout. Lures work just as well as bait for trout. Go with …

The next thing that can help is to slow down your presentation, which in will turn keep your lure or bait in the strike zone longer. Since the fish don’t want to expend a lot of energy and burn up oxygen, a well-placed, slow-moving bait will help.

A-Wake N’ Drag Fishing Charters with Captain Greg Doherty is located in the heart of one of the most versatile estuaries in the world on the pristine waters of the Tampa Bay Florida area. From chasing tailing schools of over slot redfish on the grass flats, combing the beaches for the prized tarpon aka “silver king”, or stealthily approaching lunker snook along the mangrove shorelines, you are sure to have a safe, fun filled day on the water catered to your personal desires.
Trout fishing closures have been eliminated as of February 1 for the entire state, so this means that the trout season is open for take for recreational anglers. Strong management practices for this fish have allowed the additional months of open season without reducing the numbers of fish to the point where it would negatively affect the SPR (spawning potential ratio). Speckled trout are pretty tasty. I have one client who says this is his favorite eating fish, so I am often on the hunt for it. Speckled trout are available on most grass flats. Look for those with good moving water – that’s where you’ll find the best action. Sarasota Bay is a top spot for these fish. Longboat Pass and New Pass areas bring strong water flow into the areas in between, and the grass flats west of the canal going into Cannon’s Marina are some of the best for trout fishing. The Sister Keys and the flats to the south and east of that area and north to Jewfish Key just inside Longboat Pass are awesome places to start looking for trout. If you use live shrimp under a popping cork or a DOA Deadly Combo, you will quickly reach your trout limit.
It also may be the world’s most convenient fishing pier. Rather than parking and lugging tackle and coolers, you can drive to where you want to fish and just unload your car. It’s also lit at night, so you can fish during the cooler hours of the evening or early morning. Even in the middle of the day, though, ts location at the mouth of the bay means there’s almost always a breeze and it’s easy to put up a tent for shade.

Snook are an inshore species of saltwater fish that have gained a big reputation amongst Florida anglers and visitors to the state alike. Any angler will tell you that big-time fishermen and women love chasing after these notoriously hard-to-catch fish while on fishing trips in Tampa Bay.
Capt Oliver knows how to fish the Tampa Bay! He was on time, his boat was clean, organized and working great. He put us right on the fish. I look forward to going out again for another day of fishing! T. Burton
Could I also be so bold as to suggest a new heading to the Saltstrong Webpage, namely one specifically where people could make recommendations specific to kayak/wade fishing. Some suggestions for sub headings would be;
An example of this is using a scaled sardine for Snook, I trim the tail, cutting enough so the scaled sardine can’t swim away so fast. I also use the pectoral to hook the scaled sardine (see photo), which not only slows it down, but causes the sardine to fight for its life. Snook can’t resist a scaled sardine hooked this way, even in the summer heat. Go out and try some of these things and let us know how you do.
A charter includes fishing licenses, tackle, bait, ice, cold beverages and snacks to ensure a productive day on the water. Catch is cleaned and filleted free of charge. We do suggest all anglers bring a pair of polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and wear appropriate fishing attire.
There is a silver lining to all of this bad weather news however. First, the worst is behind us and second, there are plenty of big seatrout out there waiting to be caught as fishing pressure has been incredibly light. On several recent Tampa Fishing Charters, large trout were caught but both patience and effort were required. Once an area was located that had trout, action was generally not fast. A fish or two would be caught, then the boat would be repositioned and another fish or two would be caught. As is usually the case, the bite was better on moving water. With cold temperatures resulting in an absence of whitebait, large shrimp were the go to bait. Another difficulty created by the weather was that, due to a shortage of small fish, birds were hyper aggressive and would relentlessly attempt to steal the free-lined select shrimp being presented. A trick used by some Tampa Fishing Guides for minimizing bait loss is to add a slip bobber which holds the bait just off the bottom but also add a small split shot 6 – 12 inches up from the bait so when casting, the bait sinks quickly and is not consumed by a bird. The expectation on most Tampa / Clearwater Fishing Charters is that limits of trout will be secured on every trip. This should again become reality as February arrives with average temperatures being higher…yes, January is the coldest month.
