In Tampa Bay Tarpon fishing has been good for smaller tarpon in the 5-20lb range. Live bait has been what we have mainly been fishing with, but these are awesome fish for the 8 weight fly rod and a small popper fly. We have been also been catching mangrove snapper in the bay, and these fish are excellent table fair. While they are on smaller side (10”-16”) they are abundant and they do put up a decent fight for there size. The snapper bag limit is 5 fish per person. Black Drum have also made a good showing in the TampaBay and there have been a few schools with 100-500 fish in the school. The black drum are Huge and will really test your tackle.

“Had a great time fishing with Capt Jason. Jason put us on the fish and it was non-stop action right from the moment we put our lines in the water. Myself, my 17 yr old daughter, and her friend just hooked fish after fish. Reds, spanish mackerel, jacks, sea trout, and silver trout just to name a few. Capt Jason put us on a school of reds that just wore us out!”

Take a ride through Fort DeSoto Bridge into Boca Ciega Bay. In this area you’ll find the Cow and Calf islands and Jackass Key on the western side of the bay. Each of these locations holds large schools of redfish.

Tampa Bay is an exciting fishery. There is no doubt that Captain Steve Betz and his 20+ years experience on these waters will put you on the fish. He offers years of Tampa Bay fishing reports here on his site. The data here can help increase your chances to land fish while on the water. Given that the reports come often and are seasonally based, studying the historical data here can become an asset you will wonder how you fished without.

It was a great time Scott! Thank you for coming and thank you for the review. I hope I will be able to take you on another Tampa Fishing Charter in the future. Capt. Steve Betz Tampa Flats and Bay Fishing Charters

Offshore fishing charters typically depart from St Petersburg and Clearwater. These trips offer a unique opportunity to leave the coastline behind and explore the notorious Gulf of Mexico. Game fish aplenty in the waters of the Gulf, with its countless wrecks, reefs, ledges, hard bottoms and copious weed lines.

If you’re not happy with the amount of quality redfish, snook, and trout that you’re catching per trip, then you should join our “Inshore Slammer” family because you’ll quickly learn how to consistently catch slams throughout the entire year… even without using any live bait.

Every May through August we are blessed with the arrival of Tarpon (aka the silver king). This is one fish that I believe every fisherman should battle at least once in their life. The anticipation of hooking into one of these fish will put a smile on your face as they roll all around the boat. To see a 4-6 foot fish that weighs almost as much as you do jumping 6 feet in the air while fighting against you is absolutely breathtaking!

Matt it was a pleasure having you and your wife Aubrey out on the boat. It was definitely a great 4 hours of fishing. Spring has finally sprung in the Tampa Bay area and you were the first to experience it with me in 2018….More

When the fish are thick, tip a bare jig with a live fiddler crab and it’s pompano fireworks. Pomps may bite one-here-one-there, but more often than not, you’ll have to search several pilings to find the mother lode. Do your looking with jigs and hit the school with fiddlers.

2 Shea Charters, founded in Clearwater in 2005, is a fishing charter that leads passengers on fishing journeys in Tampa Bay. Since its inception, the company has grown to operate three boats. In addition to its 42-foot Dorado luxury sports boat, 2 Shea Charters has a 24-foot Southport and a 31-foot Island Hopper. Captain TJ, the business’s founder, has been fishing and diving in the Gulf of Mexico since he was five years old. He leads a team of highly experienced and qualified captains who can guide fishers of any age and experience level.

MirrOlure TTR series plugs for deep cuts are veteran producers of big trout. When water temperatures are cold, these fish generally glue themselves to the bottom. Surface lures lose effectiveness in cold weather with only a few exceptions, and those times are near the tail end of a string of warm, sunny days, usually in the afternoon during the peak of warmth. Chuck a jig out with a long cast using a light braided line like 10-pound Power Pro, and a 15-to 20-pound test stealthy leader like Ande Fluorocarbon or Backcountry co-polymer and you have a good shot at catching dinner. I like the CAL ¼-ounce chartreuse jig head coupled with a CAL #305 night glow or the #309 night glow/ holographic gold rush Shad tail. In the same colors, the DOA Shrimp is a deadly winter lure.

Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the “Friendship Trail,” with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges—along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas)—give landbound anglers access to the bounty below.

Swift Fish Charters is a Tampa business that gives fishing guide services to local clients. Tim Whitfield, the company’s owner and Captain, is a third-generation Floridian, who grew up fishing in ponds, lakes, and creeks in Pasco County before moving onto the flats of Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay. He has been writing articles for the publication Onshore Offshore for over nine years.

We have finally had a couple good cold fronts push through and hang around long enough to cool the water temperatures throughout the bay. As we move towards December, we will sometimes switch gears and do some different types of fishing. Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Sheepshead are a few of my favorites that are great to fish for during the winter months.

Capt. Gene Maxwell is our resident expert on everything that has to do with whats biting in Tampa Bay.  A native of this area Geno has spent his whole life fishing these flats and know the area like no other.

The extensive AA log of shows is diverse and quite unpredictable, From AA‘s sickness for spotted fish in “Spotted Fever” to using chicken wire shark cages in “Shark Island”, the over 200 episodes have brought colorful stories, high seas adventure and unique Florida history to the aqua-tube!

Even if there is a good reason why Snook and Redfish make it to the top of your angler’s list, you simply cannot miss the opportunity to catch Trout, one of the tastiest fish. Those shallow flats inhabitants are easy to catch and make great table fare, just like Sheepshead and the bottom-hugging flatfish Flounder. Flounder can be found relatively close to the shore, hiding in the sand of moving waters around passes and inlets. Off the shore, you can find them near reefs and shipwrecks. Nibblers Sheepshead also hang out there. You can always count on Sheepshead bite during the winter!
