“Went fishing with Jason 3 times now. All 3 trips have been excellent. Caught a lot of fish and had a great time. Already looking forward to next spring for another fishing trip with Jason. I would recommend Steady Action Fishing with Captain Jason Prieto if you want to catch fish and have a full day of action!”

Sheepshead have already started to infiltrate the flats, shell bottom creeks, canals, and rivers. Most of the fish that we have been seeing are on the smaller side, but normally this means that the deeper rock piles and edges will be holding the big ones. The two locally known reefs, “Bahia Beach & Port Manatee” are great places to start looking for the bigger convicts. Deep water canals and bridges will also be holding them. Look for oysters or rocks and focus on fishing around structure. As far as the rig goes, I like about 24” of 15-20lb Ohero fluorocarbon leader paired with a No. 1 live bait hook. Depending on the depth and current, I will use Joyfish Split Shot weights to gently get the bait to the bottom. Live or cut pieces of Shrimp will work just fine, or if you can get some fiddler crabs they can’t resist them. The key to catching Sheepshead is “feeling” the bite. They are known for eating the bait right off the hook. Unless they are pretty excited, the bite is fairly soft and gentle. I always tell my clients, “If you think you got a bite, you did – Set the hook!” Once hooked, they are feisty fish and have tremendous power for their size. Sheepshead must be at least 12” total length to harvest, the bag limit is 15 per person, and they provide excellent table fair.

“You have to be patient,” Chiem said. “You can catch fish out here, grouper, snapper, mackerel. People don’t think you can catch grouper out here but you can. You just have to know what you’re doing and be patient.”

Cockroach Bay and Bishop's Harbor are both good fishing spots, located in the middle of Tampa Bay. Deeper channels between the islands just outside of Skyway Bridge near the south shore of lower Tampa Bay are also good fishing spots.

In Old Tampa Bay—the northwest arm of Greater Tampa Bay—three bridges link Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. North to south, these are: the Courtney Campbell, Howard Frankland and Gandy. South of the Courtney Campbell’s west end, the Tampa Bayside Bridge connects Clearwater and St. Petersburg.

Its A New Year Fishing In Tampa Bay! – Several cold fronts have swept through the Tampa Bay over the past few weeks causing the water temperatures to drop. Bait is still in the Bay, but the fish will only bite it in the areas where the water temperature is a bit warmer, such a more…

Inshore fishing this week in the Clearwater beach area has been Great, and the weather has been outstanding. In the last couple of fishing trips this week we have caught trout, redfish, snook, and big bluefish. Fishing should remain good over the next few weeks with similar conditions but I expect the triple tail to show up in the coming weeks. Give me a call if you would like to get a trip set up. – Capt.Jared (727)831-0111 www.CaptJared.com

Remarks: spawns OFFSHORE between March and September; feeds on mollusks and crustaceans, especially sand fleas; local movements are influenced by the tide, and seasonal movements are influenced by temperature.

My husband, 11 year old son and myself went out today with Capt Anthony & Trevor. We had a great time! We caught numerous fish including Snapper, Grouper, and even a shark! We will be back to fish wi…th these guys again! We would recommend these guys if you are thinking about doing a fishing charter. See More

Anglers either use an uptide rod between 9 and 10 feet in length to cast from the boat or a shorter downtide rod between 6 and 8 feet. Lines are usually between 18 pounds and 50 pounds breaking strain dependent on the species of fish being targeted. Reels are usually multipliers, although fixed spool reels are being used more and more. Baits are similar to those used for beach and rock fishing except they are often larger since larger fish are targeted. The species will include all the beach species, but now also include big conger eels and small sharks like tope and smoothhound.

To get the most out of Snook fishing in Tampa Bay, you’ll want to target the beaches, residential docks and mangrove shorelines. Stocking the livewell with pilchards or scaled sardines (their favorite) is always a good choice. If you prefer artificials, plugs and jigs typically do the job just as well.

The irony is that back when I was growing up in Florida, if someone said, “fishing the flats,” that simply meant you had accidently run your boat up on a sandbar and you went fishing with the lightest tackle you had on the boat while you waited for the tide to come in…

Capt Steve hit the spots where the fish were. We probably caught about 30 fish total – trout, ladyfish, sheepshead etc… with 6 keepers. He does everything and is a very good captain. I Highly recommend his service, the trip was very enjoyable. I certainly…More

What a great fishing trip, I was only in town for a couple days to move my son into his dorm , I called last minute , Chet was able to get me on the water and on the fish! My daughter was able to tag along. Caught numerous species of fish and in good numbers. Also saw plenty if extra… Had a manatee right under the boat, sharks and rays as well. Definitely will return for more!!!!

“Fish today get a lot of pressure, so to get bites, drop in leader strength and hook sizes. For example, when we used to live-bait for sailfish, 80-pound fluorocarbon leaders were standard and 50-pound leaders were used by those in the know. Today, 40 is the new 50. We’re using lighter leaders on sailfish and circle hooks one to two sizes smaller to get them to bite.”

“Hit and Run Charters” owned and operated by Captain Tyler Kapela is a professional fishing charter service that provides clients with the ultimate inshore/near-shore fishing experience. Whether you are an expert in search of a trophy or an absolute beginner Captain Tyler will cater to all of your fishing needs. He is a passionate, knowledgeable and experienced master of his craft with a calm, patient and fun loving demeanor with a knack for catching redfish, snook, large trout, inshore grouper, and especially TARPON.

If you ever battled a Tarpon before, you know this is one durable trophy fish. Most fights last from 20 to 40 minutes, although you should try and end the struggle as soon as possible. Other than ensuring the fish’s survival, this also helps in avoiding the sharks. The toothy critters are hardly scarce around here.

I started the month off on vacation fishing in Venice, Louisiana catching Bull Redfish in the 40” range. These fish are hard pulling and don’t give up. Every year I like to make a fishing trip to Louisiana as they have some amazing fishing there. This year has been the toughest year yet, but I was still able to catch some of the big bulls they have!

As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf.

There is also fantastic near shore fishing around many artificial wrecks, and reefs where you’ll find Grouper, Mackerel, Mangrove Snapper and many other species that will make for a great day of fishing!

InShore Tampa Bay Fishing Charters, centered in St. Petersburg, is a fishing charter company serving clients from all over the area. Customers who sign up for InShore Tampa Bay Fishing Charters will receive, included in the price of the package, Florida State fishing licenses, rod and reel set-ups, live and artificial baits, and safety equipment. Captain Lee Blick is a native Floridian, who grew up fishing in Tampa Bay.

Clearwater Beach fishing has been good just before I left I was catching good numbers of redfish and trout. When I got back mid month we got right back to it with Redfish, Trout, Snook, mackerel, jacks, and many more species fishing the deep grass flats just inside Clearwater harbor and up around St. Joesph sound in Dunedin. Live sardine have been key to our success and they have been abundant, but small. We have even done a couple fly fishing trips lately, and we had no issues catching plenty of fish on the fly! If you want to do a fly trip just let me know.
