Most pilings bear numbers for maintenance reference. Keep track of where you caught fish and note specific points such as piling design, compass directions and any particular markings such as ropes, graffiti or excessive pelican guano.
Capt. has not only put me on fish every time I have booked a charter – He got me my biggest tarpon ever 150+!!! He is the best Captain I have ever fished with and I recommend him highly. Always a great time and always finds the fish! -John Lashbrook
Speckled Sea Trout will show up in good numbers as we get through the holidays. The cooler water temps will attract the larger “gator” trout to the shallower grass flats during the warmer parts of the day. My favorite places to target are sandy “potholes” that are peppered throughout any productive area. The nice thing about trout is they will generally take an artificial lure sometimes just as good as live bait. First thing in the morning, I like throwing top water plugs and as the sun comes up I will switch to soft plastics. One of my favorite surface baits is a Zara Spook in the “bone/white” color. On the colder days, a live shrimp will do the trick. Try using a Cajun Thunder Back Bay popping cork if they fish are not active. The sound produced by the popping cork really gets them hunting for the bait. The size limit for Speckled Sea Trout is 15” min, and the bag limit is 4 per person with only 1 fish measuring over 20”.
A fishing trip along these back bays, white sandy beaches and mangrove shorelines always doubles as a premier nature tour. Don’t be surprised if your charter gets briefly interrupted by curious dolphins, hungry manatees, or flocks of exotic birds. Top that off with some of the most magnificent sunrises and sunsets anywhere on the West Coast, and you’ve got yourself a one-of-a-kind fishing experience, bar none.
Capt Oliver knows how to fish the Tampa Bay! He was on time, his boat was clean, organized and working great. He put us right on the fish. I look forward to going out again for another day of fishing! T. Burton

Clearwater Beach is getting ready for Summer vacation! Summer is here and everyone is heading for the beaches including the fish… Snook are out around the gulf beaches gathering up for Spawning season and are quite the fighters once hooked up. Snook season is closed currently, but make great catch and reason action. Redfish have been a around and in good numbers. The high tide has been best to catch these fish, and we have often been fishing for trout and snook while we wait for the tide to get to the right level.
If you’re interested in getting even more insight into the fishing areas, be sure to check out our Insider Plus membership because I show the exact spots I see/catch each fish along with all of my pre-trip planning activities… here’s a link to learn more about it: http://v2.saltstrong.com/members.

Tampa Bay’s Snook and Redfish bite has been has hot! Inside the bay snook are bunching back up for the spawn, and the redfish are schooled up as well make for some fun fishing. Snook have been averaging anywhere from 20”-30” with a few large biting as well. Redfish have been top of the slot size 27” or even as large as 36” and we are catching them in shallow water 2′ or less. Live bait and Cut bait have both been working well. Trout fishing has also be outstanding, and getting a few for a fresh fish dinner hasn’t been a problem.
After seeing the healthy grass flats from the window seat of many flights while descending towards Tampa International Airport (who would have ever guessed you could find fishing spots from a commercial airline flight), I finally decided to venture out there to see if they held redfish, snook, and/or trout.

These structures provide fish much-needed shade, good ambush points with current dynamics and lots of forage species. More or less an emergent reef, a bridge gives anglers a clear target to fish and the ability to move up or down a few pilings to locate the bite. Common targets include tarpon, cobia, pompano, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, redfish, black drum, speckled trout and snook. Spanish mackerel and bluefish make seasonal appearances, and ladyfish are always a possibility.
Incredible snook fishing has begun – Tampa Bay is fishing like a champ as water temps continue to climb higher. The snook bite is outrageous on high water right now. Soft plastics and live pilchards will get the job done. The fly fishing for snook is also fantastic. To learn about Tampa more…

• Watch Your Clearance: During a sudden summer downpour, my friend rushed under a section of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge (now a pier) but forgot to pull down the rods from his T-top holders. The sound of hopelessly scarred fiberglass and graphite scraping against concrete was far worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Lesson: Check your clearance and don’t take chances with rods or antennas.

There are plenty of captains willing to clean and fillet the fish for you following the trip. Unlike Tarpon, Reds make for a delicious table fare. In fact, many of the local restaurants will be more than happy to cook your catch. How’s that for a fresh lunch?
Cockroach Bay and Bishop's Harbor are both good fishing spots, located in the middle of Tampa Bay. Deeper channels between the islands just outside of Skyway Bridge near the south shore of lower Tampa Bay are also good fishing spots.
On a particularly good year, the season can last up to 7-8 months. As any angler half worth his bait knows, that’s hardly standard for any Tarpon fishery. Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.
Awesome video! Damn dude, you really got me considering picking up a paddle board. I like the idea of having the higher vantage point. Most of the areas I fish in are so shallow and sometimes I feel like I’m spooking fish away before I have a chance to spot them. I always wondered how stable those paddle boards are. I weigh about 230 and don’t know how I’m going to avoid losing my balance if I hook a big ol’ snook. ha
