Spot tail pinfish has been the hot bait on an outgoing tide. The Spanish mackerel bite is good at both the Bay and Gulf Piers and there’s whiting on the beach and in the passes. “Inside the park, there’s been some nice trout caught from the ‘Mud Hole’ area and the snook bite is pretty decent,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).

• Laws: Consult local or Coast Guard authorities for special navigation rules applicable to bridges in your area. The U.S. Coast Guard has relaxed its post 9-11 regulations limiting boat proximity to bridges. Currently, a 100-foot security zone applies to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge’s center span, its pilings, dolphins and rock abutments. All other rules of navigation still apply, but anglers are allowed to fish elsewhere along the Skyway and other area bridges. FS

My brother Luke fishes this Rapala X-Rap with and without the red feathers in the back in both fresh and salt water, but depending on where you are fishing (and what species) you can try it with or without.

Inshore and offshore fishing are vastly different, and both have aspects that make them worthwhile. Although it’s arguable that offshore is more athletic or requires more skill, do not be fooled. Regardless of where you are on the water, you can still find a challenging catch, good eating, and a fantastic time.
