Tampa Bay is fed by well over a 100 inland tributaries. In these you will find brackish water rivers and creeks that allow for some of the best backcountry fishing action in the state. This also provides temperate waters for game fish to congregate in when water temps change in the bay.

First up on the list, Spotted Seatrout is quite likely the most abundant sport fish in all of Tampa Bay. Not unlike Redfish, Trout is great to eat and can be found rummaging the shallow flats all throughout the year. They also like drifting to deeper waters (up to 15ft) during the cooler months.

5: Around the Sunshine Skyway and lower Tampa Bay, the gag grouper bite has been real good around the south Skyway area. There’s also lots of nice sheepshead and along with some mangrove snapper. The snook are still biting, but they’re on the move. The area flats are producing some nice trout and the size is getting better. There’s also a good bite on black drum from 18 to 24 inches, reports Eric Gilbert Skyway Bait and Tackle (941-357-1122).

Remarks: spawns primarily in summer; cannot tolerate water temperatures below 60 degrees F; can tolerate wholly fresh or saltwater; schools along shore and in passes during spawning season; feeds on fish and large crustaceans.
