On a particularly good year, the season can last up to 7-8 months. As any angler half worth his bait knows, that’s hardly standard for any Tarpon fishery. Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.
Inshore fishing is any fishing that takes place in water up to thirty meters deep. Since the waters are more calm, the requirements for a fishing vessel are less intense, and boats can be very small and basic. In terms of equipment, such as poles, holders, attire, and storage, inshore fishing requires less, as well. Light rods and even small nets can be utilized to catch the large variety of fish that you can find in shallow waters. Some may argue that the downside to this is that, with the lessened hardship, you also lessen the excitement. With less intense boats, gear, and waters, you are more likely than not catching smaller fish. The big trophies — blue fin tuna, shark, and the like — will rarely be found in these waters. If it’s big trophies you are hoping for, offshore fishing may be more your speed.
Extending over 400 square miles and fed by the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the entire bay and its tributaries act as a reliably diverse game fish nursery. This alone is already a feat in and of itself. As any seasoned angler will attest, most top-tier fisheries struggle with maintaining the variety of its celebrated fish stock. Tampa Bay’s massive ecosystem, on the other hand, plays host to pretty much all of the state’s favorite bruisers. When locals say there’s something in these waters for everyone, you better be sure they mean it.

My brother Luke fishes this Rapala X-Rap with and without the red feathers in the back in both fresh and salt water, but depending on where you are fishing (and what species) you can try it with or without.
• Watch Your Clearance: During a sudden summer downpour, my friend rushed under a section of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge (now a pier) but forgot to pull down the rods from his T-top holders. The sound of hopelessly scarred fiberglass and graphite scraping against concrete was far worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Lesson: Check your clearance and don’t take chances with rods or antennas.
We have expectations of only catching a few fish. They where exceeded ten fold. We started small with shephead to make sure we got some fish. Then we stepped it up from species to species and did amazing on all. Steve is a great guy…More

Tampa Bay fishing hotspots don’t end with saltwater. The Tampa area has some of the most productive inland lakes and rivers. Whenever you are done with fighting Tarpon on the bay, head to a local lake for Largemouth Bass. Or just explore the Tampa fishing piers!
As the weather gets warmer, sometimes it’s just more fun to wade fish. Grab a pair of sneakers and light fishing tackle, then cast into the channels that cut through lush seagrass beds. Be careful not to trample through seagrasses though – they’re critical habitat for almost nearly every fish in Tampa Bay.
Capt. Matt has not put me on fish every time I have booked a charter – He got me my biggest tarpon ever 150+!!! He is the best Captain I have ever fished with and I recommend him highly. Always a great time and always finds the fish! -John Lashbrook
The plume of tidal flow, accelerated by funneling through the bridge, can move the fish a significant distance from the structure. Similarly, tides move bait schools around and that often influences where predators position themselves.

Tournament entry is reasonable ($25), anglers fish for 5 species and vie for a decent range of prize money. This is a tournament for everyone and it is also fair to say that folks from across the globe come to fish it…. (last years overall winner was a bloke from Jolly Old England).
First up on the list, Spotted Seatrout is quite likely the most abundant sport fish in all of Tampa Bay. Not unlike Redfish, Trout is great to eat and can be found rummaging the shallow flats all throughout the year. They also like drifting to deeper waters (up to 15ft) during the cooler months.
Large schools of redfish are found swimming through the shallow flats of Tampa Bay during September and October. Bunces Pass has good water flow and features spoil islands and troughs just in the pass with many fine fishing spots for redfish, snapper, trout and snook. The eastern side of Mullet Key offers excellent fishing for redfish.

We have just got our first cold front here in Florida as I write this report. Earlier this week leading up to the front we had some outstanding fishing for reds, trout and snook! I fished with a few different groups, and had a couple multi boat charters with Capt. Mike Cole, and Capt.Ethan Kiburz. Fishing out of Clearwater beach for most of my charter trips we targeted all three species fishing live baits around islands and docks inshore. We caught several redfish, snook, and trout all on light tackle spinning rods with 15lb test line. Tampa bay fishing was really good as well as we did a few days targeting snook in the back country waters in the bay to avoid the windy weather. Here’s some of the pic’s from this past week’s fishing trips.
December Fishing Report for the Clearwater, Clearwater Beach, St.Pete Beach, and Tampa Bay Area. We have been targeting Trout, Redfish, and Snook for most of December with good results. Live shrimp, Sardines, and Artificial lures have been working. Most days we are just doing half day charters, but a few anglers have been doing full days. Here are some pics from recently.
Capt. Steve has lived in Tampa since 1969. He relocated to Tampa at the young age of 9 years old along with his mother, father and 5 brothers and sisters. Steve’s passion for fishing started at a young age fishing the local ponds, lakes and rivers. I the early 80’s Steve was introduced to the world of Snook fishing. Snook fishing was like no other he had done and he quickly became addicted to the salt.

Not only is fishing during the night convenient, it also makes sense. Most species are nocturnal and prefer to feed when the sun comes down. This rings especially true during the hottest months of the year.
