Inshore Snook, Redfish, and Trout have all been caught on recent fishing charters. Snook season is open and we have been catching slot fish. Snook slot size is 28″-33″. Redfish are getting caught on most charter. We have been free lining live sardines around oyster beds, and cut baiting around docks with good success. Trout fishing is also getting better by the day, and the size of the fish are increasing as they come in from offshore and gather in shallows.
Non Stop Fishing Charters is a St. Pete Beach fishing charter service providing separate service packages for catching tarpon, snook, redfish, and trout. Additionally, the company offers families a “Take Kids Fishing” option. Captain Kevin Walton is a sixth-generation Floridian with considerable experience in back-country fishing, flats fishing, and beach fishing. He earned his license in 2001 and has since then been running charters with fishers of all ages and experience levels.
Anglers either use an uptide rod between 9 and 10 feet in length to cast from the boat or a shorter downtide rod between 6 and 8 feet. Lines are usually between 18 pounds and 50 pounds breaking strain dependent on the species of fish being targeted. Reels are usually multipliers, although fixed spool reels are being used more and more. Baits are similar to those used for beach and rock fishing except they are often larger since larger fish are targeted. The species will include all the beach species, but now also include big conger eels and small sharks like tope and smoothhound.
“Had a great time fishing with Capt Jason. Jason put us on the fish and it was non-stop action right from the moment we put our lines in the water. Myself, my 17 yr old daughter, and her friend just hooked fish after fish. Reds, spanish mackerel, jacks, sea trout, and silver trout just to name a few. Capt Jason put us on a school of reds that just wore us out!”
Not only is fishing during the night convenient, it also makes sense. Most species are nocturnal and prefer to feed when the sun comes down. This rings especially true during the hottest months of the year.
1: At Big Pier 60 in Clearwater, the Spanish mackerel bite is still good early in the morning with some nice keepers being caught. At night, good size speckled trout are a solid catch. Anglers should note the Pier’s hours are now 6 a.m to 9:30 p.m. seven days a week, reports Big Pier 60 Bait & Tackle (727-462-6466).
Fishing from a pier is a popular pastime for may landlubbers around Tampa Bay. There are quite a number of piers around the bay. Some jut only a few feet into the water, while others extend a quarter of a mile or more away from shore (the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park south pier extends almost two miles into Tampa Bay). Piers offer anglers a chance to fish waters that cannot be reached from shore or wading. Many popular sport fish hang around fishing piers because piers provide structure and food. At night, these fish can be seen cruising around the edges of the pier’s shadows. Anglers at many piers catch most of the popular sport fish, as well as some other species like pinfish, shark, catfish, ladyfish, and spadefish. This makes fishing piers a great place to get started in fishing.
Tampa fishing is getting into its stride. The big Tarpon are on their way! Almost everything is biting right now. The baitfish start to fill up the flats and both game fish and anglers follow in pursuit. Redfish and Snook fishing is hot.
Welcome to Tampa Bay, Florida, home of some the best light tackle inshore fishing in the world! I’m a native of the Tampa Bay area and have been fishing Tampa Bay area waters all of my life. This gives me the unique advantage of knowing when and where the fish are biting year round. Born in St. Petersburg and never lived outside of the county, I’ve called Tampa Bay waters my “back yard” for a long time. I’m a local Tampa fishing guide and have been charter fishing Tampa Bay area since 1997. All my Tampa Bay area fishing charters are family friendly with an emphasis on being easy going and having a great time on the water! I invite you to take a look at my website, look through the photo galleries and fishing reports, and browse the pages to learn more about the fish species we target and when and where we target them.
4: At Fort DeSoto Park, plenty of pompano along with flounder and sheepshead are being caught around the area. Anglers are catching some real nice keeper gag grouper from the bridge. Spot tail pinfish has been the hot bait on an outgoing tide. The Spanish mackerel bite is good at both the Bay and Gulf Piers and there’s whiting on the beach and in the passes. “Inside the park, there’s been some nice trout caught from the ‘Mud Hole’ area and the snook bite is pretty decent,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).
Some of the species you may catch on a Tampa fishing charters are, but not limited to, Snook, Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout, Tarpon, Black Drum, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Cobia and Sharks.
January fishing has had consistent with catches of Sea Trout, Sheepshead, Black drum, Pompano, and a few Redfish. We have been fishing in between cold fronts, but when its not blowing we’re fishing! We have mainly been fishing with live shrimp and some artificial lures. If you prefer lures over bait just let me know! Here are some pics from the first half of the month.
Couldn’t have planned a better day! It was everyone’s favorite part of our week long stay in Tampa! Shark fishing was our favorite. Thank you guys for the awesome memories and delicious fish that we h…ad cooked up over at the Friendly Fisherman. See More

With a second set of controls up in the tower, sight fishing ability is greatly enhanced. The net effect is more time spent fishing where the fish are. The tower also increases the chances at getting a good cast at a roving Cobia, Shark or Tarpon that otherwise might not be seen.
Saltwater fishing boats are typically larger and designed for coastal and offshore fishing, such as sport and open fishermen boats, center consoles, and power catamarans decked and rigged for fishing.
Basic light to medium tackle may be able to cover you sufficiently in most situations when fishing in freshwater. However, depending upon whether you happen to be deep sea fishing, drifting in a small skiff a half mile off the beach, surf fishing onshore or from a bridge or pier, you will need to carefully match your gear and technique to the circumstances at hand.
For whatever reason, Tampa Bay is often unjustly overlooked as a premier fly fishing destination. It can certainly be hard to compete with the traditional heavyweights such as Homosassa and the Florida Keys. However, the relatively-untapped potential of the Bay should make it incredibly appealing to real fly enthusiasts everywhere.
The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.
These structures provide fish much-needed shade, good ambush points with current dynamics and lots of forage species. More or less an emergent reef, a bridge gives anglers a clear target to fish and the ability to move up or down a few pilings to locate the bite. Common targets include tarpon, cobia, pompano, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, redfish, black drum, speckled trout and snook. Spanish mackerel and bluefish make seasonal appearances, and ladyfish are always a possibility.
Night fishing is always a bonus, as bridge lights attract baitfish, which draw in predators. From June through October, tarpon patrol the shadowlines of most Tampa Bay bridges and anglers drifting live baitfish or accurately casting MirrOlures, D.O.A. Baitbusters and swimbaits will put a few nocturnal ‘poons in the air.
We have expectations of only catching a few fish. They where exceeded ten fold. We started small with shephead to make sure we got some fish. Then we stepped it up from species to species and did amazing on all. Steve is a great guy…More
Where found: a Gulf species that may occur in the Atlantic waters of extreme south-eastern Florida; adults predominantly found INSHORE residing in bays and inlets but may move OFFSHORE during winter months; young occur INSHORE in shallow bays.
You will be aboard a fully restored 24 foot Proline that built for shallow draft, and also to handle the choppy open Tampa Bay fishing charters waters. You can read more about the boat on the Boat page.
It’s worth noting that the open season for some of the Gulf species tends to be very limited. It’s always a good idea to check with your captain or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission before making the charter arrangements.
There are several types and designs that can be highly effective when used in saltwater. They include, but are not limited to, hard baits like plugs, poppers and spoons and soft baits such as plastic swimbaits, grubs and slugs. The latter category also includes recently developed biodegradable baits like Berkley GULP!, which incorporate pheromone-based scents that chemically provoke a feeding response in fish.
Speckled Sea Trout will show up in good numbers as we get through the holidays. The cooler water temps will attract the larger “gator” trout to the shallower grass flats during the warmer parts of the day. My favorite places to target are sandy “potholes” that are peppered throughout any productive area. The nice thing about trout is they will generally take an artificial lure sometimes just as good as live bait. First thing in the morning, I like throwing top water plugs and as the sun comes up I will switch to soft plastics. One of my favorite surface baits is a Zara Spook in the “bone/white” color. On the colder days, a live shrimp will do the trick. Try using a Cajun Thunder Back Bay popping cork if they fish are not active. The sound produced by the popping cork really gets them hunting for the bait. The size limit for Speckled Sea Trout is 15” min, and the bag limit is 4 per person with only 1 fish measuring over 20”.
Daily bag is 5 fish except from Nov. 1-30, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken only by pole-and-line; and from December 1-14, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken by any legal means, including gigging. Possession limit is equal to the daily bag.

September Fishing has been good! Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard, but didn’t hit Clearwater beach, St. Pete beach, or Tampa Bay. While many people lost power here I was on vacation in Venice,Louisiana catching Bull Redfish! I came home the second week of the month and the Snook, Redfish, trout, mackerel and many others were ready to bite, and the weather has been perfect with no wind or rain!
Bag and length limits apply to listed saltwater species. There are no bag, possession, or length limits on game or nongame fish, except as listed in this guide. See definitions of daily bag and possession limits.
The waters are still a bit cooler than the kind a bunch of fish like to aggressively chew in. Fishing conditions, however, have slowly but surely begun to improve. On a recon mission Tuesday, I visited both Sunshine Skyway bridge fishing piers and th…
Reel Water Charters Offers both Inshore Fishing & Tarpon Fishing Charters in and around the Tampa Bay, and St. Petersburg area. Covering the West central section including St. Pete Beach, Ft. On a particularly good year, the season can last up to 7-8 months. As any angler half worth his bait knows, that’s hardly standard for any Tarpon fishery. Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.
