Capt. Matt has not only put me on fish every time I have booked a charter – He got me my biggest tarpon ever 150+!!! He is the best Captain I have ever fished with and I recommend him highly. Always a great time and always finds the fish! -John Lashbrook

Inshore 2 Offshore Fishing Adventures, based in Ruskin, leads locals on fishing trips to catch native species such as redfish, snook, and tarpon. Service options include four, six, and eight-hour trips, in addition to a five-hour option, at a discounted price, exclusively for active and retired members of the military. Captain Sean Goddard takes his passengers on journeys through Cockroach Bay, Piney Point, Bishops Harbor, and the shore reefs of Tampa Bay.

The flats are really coming to life in north Pinellas County. Our main focus this time of year is spotted sea trout, though redfish are cooperating and schooling a bit. Snook are also responding to the warm weather, occasionally eating on the falling…

Lower Tampa Bay around the Clam Bar on the Pinellas side is notorious for holding some monster black drum that begin moving into the bay over the next couple of months. Many of these breeders range up into the 50-plus pound bracket. Due to their size, stout rods and line are advised in order to land these beasts. Like the sheepshead, these fish will take a shrimp tipped jig. A bag limit of five fish per person between 14 and 24-inches may be kept and one of these five may be over 24-inches. Black drum over the maximum size begin holding more parasitic worms. While they may be harmless to ingest when cooked properly, some feel that they aren’t very appetizing. Boat docks in Sarasota Bay are great spots to find black drum as well.

In backcountry pockets you can find lurking Snook and Redfish skimming the mud flats. Out front in the grass flats you again can find Snook patrolling the edges of the mangroves, while right behind you massive pushes can be sight casted from tailing Red’s. Finding Flounder near shallow structure is very common, as well as Gator Seatrout working the bait pods just a little further out.

‘Secrets of the Bay’ is a mini-series which runs intermittently throughout the regular Average Angler seasons. Each episode highlights historical elements of specific places, towns and landmarks around Tampa Bay.

2 Shea Charters, founded in Clearwater in 2005, is a fishing charter that leads passengers on fishing journeys in Tampa Bay. Since its inception, the company has grown to operate three boats. He leads a team of highly experienced and qualified captains who can guide fishers of any age and experience level.

• Dangling Tackle: Popping out from the bridge shadows and running face-first into a dropping hook or sinker is a guaranteed ER visit. Also, an often tenuous relationship exists between those fishing from a bridge and those motoring around it, so remember the courtesy thing and stay clear of deployed lines.

Capt. Jason offers exceptional Tampa fishing charters here at Fishn Fl (formerly Chasing Tails Charters) out of the greater Tampa Bay area including: Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg & Anna Maria Island. He also runs seasonal charters in the Florida Keys and Homosassa, FL.

The Skyway is not the only place for boat-less souls to land a fish. There is good wade fishing leading up to the bridge, as well as the areas around the Courtney Campbell Causeway and the Gandy Bridge. Fort De Soto Park has good wade fishing, as well as two piers. The Redington Long Pier off Redington Beach has been a go-to spot for pier fishermen for over 50 years.

Anchor uptide of a bridge and hang a chum block off your stern to amass enticing bait schools and provide predators a scent trail to follow. Snapper will rise from the pilings, mackerel will swarm the area and you’ll probably raise a few cobia and sharks. Supplementing a chumline with freshly cut threadfin herring chunks can jumpstart a good bite.

“I was introduced to Jason as a guest on a charter 6 years ago and have been using him ever since. I’ve gone on fishing trips for business, with friends and family (with children) and in each case Jason has always been appropriately service driven in each environment. You just won’t find better.”

Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.

In Old Tampa Bay—the northwest arm of Greater Tampa Bay—three bridges link Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. North to south, these are: the Courtney Campbell, Howard Frankland and Gandy. South of the Courtney Campbell’s west end, the Tampa Bayside Bridge connects Clearwater and St. Petersburg.

First up on the list, Spotted Seatrout is quite likely the most abundant sport fish in all of Tampa Bay. Not unlike Redfish, Trout is great to eat and can be found rummaging the shallow flats all throughout the year. They also like drifting to deeper waters (up to 15ft) during the cooler months.

Dozens of shallow water species call Tampa Bay home — from redfish, snook, trout, tarpon, sheephead, spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper… you name it. If it swims in the Gulf of Mexico, you can probably catch it in Tampa Bay.

Captain Matt is the man!!! Truely a savy fisherman and a pioneer poon killa (always catch & release). He’s the only man to be out on the waters of Tampa bay with. If you are lucky enough to make time to fish, he’s the guy you want to guide your adventure. No question!!! See you in may Matt! Can’t wait!-Bradley W Vetter

“I fished with Captain Jason and can’t say enough good things about him. Jason was timely, professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. We caught a nice amount of fish and Jason took us to different areas to target the fish we wanted to catch.”

The original bridge was destroyed when the freighter Summit Venture collided with a column of the bridge during a storm on May 9, 1980. In 1992, the center spans of the old bridge were demolished and the remaining sections on the Pinellas and Manatee county sides were converted into piers. The south Skyway pier is the longest fishing pier in the world.

Great full day trip today with the Figueroas. Loads of snook to the point that we lost count. Early morning trout were chewing as well. Dinner for the table, successful fun day fishing! #inshoresociety Captains @captkennysmith & @captcrisminami Call to book your trip, spring bite is hot! ?? 813-609-0910

We have just got our first cold front here in Florida as I write this report. Earlier this week leading up to the front we had some outstanding fishing for reds, trout and snook! I fished with a few different groups, and had a couple multi boat charters with Capt. Mike Cole,  and Capt.Ethan Kiburz.  Fishing out of Clearwater beach for most of my charter trips we targeted all three species fishing live baits around islands and docks inshore. We caught several redfish, snook, and trout all on light tackle spinning rods with 15lb test line. Tampa bay fishing was really good as well as we did a few days targeting snook in the back country waters in the bay to avoid the windy weather. Here’s some of the pic’s from this past week’s fishing trips.

If you are planning to catch and release on your snook fishing trip, your Guide can provide valuable assistance and education about the proper handling techniques for releasing snook back into the wild.

The Snook has a most distinctive body shape, featuring a tapered head and snout, underslung lower jaw, large fins and, most distinctive of all, a promi- nent black stripe running the full length of the lateral line. The stripe is present in all species of Snook. Coloration is generally dark gray to black on the dorsal surface, shading to silvery on the sides.
