September Fishing has been good! Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard, but didn’t hit Clearwater beach, St. Pete beach, or Tampa Bay. While many people lost power here I was on vacation in Venice,Louisiana catching Bull Redfish! I came home the second week of the month and the Snook, Redfish, trout, mackerel and many others were ready to bite, and the weather has been perfect with no wind or rain!
The family-owned Gulfstream II Fishing Charters, based in Clearwater, has been leading Tampa Metro area clients on fishing expeditions since 1974. The fleet includes three vessels, including the business’ namesake, the Gulfstream II, a U.S. Coast Guard-inspected boat that can carry up to 22 people, as well as the Gulfstream, which can carry as many as a dozen people. The third vessel, the Wizard, is 35 feet long and certified to carry smaller groups, of six people or fewer.
Another tip is to fish the best tidal current times. The strongest tides will be before and after the full and new moon each month. The stronger tidal current brings cooler water, along with higher oxygen levels and forage. You could also try fishing under and around bridges that throw more shade, which in turn keeps the water cooler. Bridges at this time of year are excellent for good size Mangrove Snapper, besides all the other species that hang around them, like Pompano, Black Drum, etc. Deep water docks that have good tidal flow running around them will usually hold fish.
Most pilings bear numbers for maintenance reference. Keep track of where you caught fish and note specific points such as piling design, compass directions and any particular markings such as ropes, graffiti or excessive pelican guano.

Interested potential clients may quickly schedule an appointment through the company’s online scheduling system.

“It’s really relaxing to come out here and fish,” said Jamie Messina, 42, of Tampa. “It’s nice coming out here at night when the lights are on and you have the view of the city. You can catch jacks and angel fish. I’ve even seen some small hammerhead (sharks) caught here.”
May Fishing Charter Report for Clearwater Beach, Tampa Bay, and St.Pete Beach area. Inshore and Nearshore the fish are biting!! Inshore Snook, Redfish, Trout, and Finally the Tarpon are all biting. Nearshore Snapper, Sharks, and Permit are around.
If it swims, it’s in these waters. The Bay provides such a wide variety of aquatic life, it’s not uncommon to bag more than a dozen species on any given outing. The mighty Snook prowls the mangrove shorelines. Schools of tailing Redfish rest on the glassy grass flats. And the notorious Florida Tarpon roam the Bay’s endless passes. Whatever you’re after, it’s never more than a cast away.
However, these grounds are home to much more than just the traditional heavy-hitters. The local species also include Trout, Jack Crevalle, Grouper, Snapper, Cobia, Lady Fish, Mackerel, Flounder, and a variety of sharks. All of these and many more call Tampa Bay their home throughout different parts of the year.
Fishing is a year-round activity here, but expect the types of fish you can find to change. Just know that there’s also great adventure and great fishing to be had far from shore. To reserve spot on a charter boat it’s best to call ahead.

Sheepshead will be coming into their spawn around the full moon beginning in February. Some of the largest sheepies of the year are usually caught during the next two months. They are a tough catch on artificial lures, but tipping jigs with a small thumbnail size morsel of fresh shrimp can add to your mixed winter bag of fish. You’ll find the bulk of these fish around boat docks and structure, like the many artificial reefs that were made from the rubble of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
Clearwater Beach Fishing Inshore this month has produced lots of Spotted Sea Trout, a few Redfish, and a some snook.
