On the Space Coast, black drum have been caught in both the Haulover Canal and the northern end of the Banana River. Fresh cut mullet, ladyfish, and live shrimp on a jig head are getting the best bite. Anglers will want to cast the bait in front of the fish or rest the bait on the bottom along channel drop-offs. These black drum have been averaging 15 inches with the largest fish measuring 23 inches, reports Capt. Keith Mixon of Mixin’ Work With Play Fishing Charters. (321-212-8484).

The plume of tidal flow, accelerated by funneling through the bridge, can move the fish a significant distance from the structure. Similarly, tides move bait schools around and that often influences where predators position themselves.

The marine waters of New York host varied and exciting fishing opportunities for recreational anglers. Long Island is ideally situated so that both southern and northern fish species frequent our waters. You can fish for Atlantic cod, winter flounder and mackerel in the spring, or try your luck for bluefish, summer flounder and Spanish mackerel when school is out.

As a friend of mine once said, I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t discovered their passion in life. We all have one inside of us. It’s that activity that brings you immense satisfaction. At seven years of age, I was introduced to fishing and knew it would be a part of my life from there forward. Although I fished whenever the opportunity arose, it would be a long time before I would actually become a guide. I went to high school, then college. Next, I held a variety of sales positions that took me to every state in the US.  Then, in late 2005, it was time….time to walk away to spend my working hours doing something that I had always really wanted to do…fish. I pulled the plug to pursue my dream…become a fishing guide in the great state of Florida….arguably one of the best states to fish in the entire United States.

The hooks that are usually employed for saltwater application include the J hook, the live bait hook and the circle hook, each of which has its own specialized application. The J hook can either be a ‘baitholder’ with a few barbs on the shank or a standard J with a smooth shank. These are best for fishing with chunk or strip bait and allow you to hook the bait multiple times in order to keep it secure.

9. Store the motor in an upright position in adry, well-ventilated area. Select an area with constant temperature to avoid corrosion caused by condensation. Do not store next to furnaces, heaters, etc.

Another fantastic winter species in the Bay area is Flounder. Undoubtedly one of the most unattractive fish, but probably one of the best tasting! This time of year, the Flounder will move in on large sandy areas in big numbers. For flats fishing, target potholes and creek mouths with substantial flow. Use the same rig for Sheepshead but you might want to switch to a circle hook. On the warmer days, a small live greenback or shrimp on the bottom will be best. If you like throwing artificial, try a #313 Gold Glitter C.A.L jig from D.O.A paired with a 3/8 oz Hook-Up Lures jig head. The heavier jig head will keep your bait on the bottom and in the strike zone longer during the retrieve. On the colder days, the fish might not be as active. Try a cut piece of any baitfish or shrimp. Some great areas to look for the “Door Mats” are around the Skyway Bridge, Fort Desoto, and Pinellas Point. The minimum size is 12” total length and the bag limit is 10 per person.

Daily bag is 5 fish except from Nov. 1-30, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken only by pole-and-line; and from December 1-14, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken by any legal means, including gigging. Possession limit is equal to the daily bag.

Salt rapidly accelerates the corrosion process, and the resulting rust can dramatically weaken anything metallic that it comes in contact with, including your reel and attached hardware as well as the line guides on your fishing rod. The good news is that it can be easily avoided by simply washing down your rod and reel with fresh water from your garden hose every time that you return from fishing in saltwater. Spraying your reel afterward with a silicon-based lubricant like WD-40 will also help greatly in extending the life of your gear. Saltwater tackle is generally somewhat sturdier than gear that was designed for use in freshwater, but you must still do your part in order to keep it functional.

Tidal movement just about every type of saltwater fishing venue except the blue waters offshore. In order to optimize your angling success, it is vital to use the changing of the tides to your advantage. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to arrive at your chosen fishing destination at least an hour before the high tide is scheduled to peak, and plan to continue fishing for at least another half hour thereafter.
