Nearshore fishing trips of St.Pete beach and Clearwater beach have been catching nice sized mackerel and schoolie sized kingfish. The random cobia have been showing up as well, and we still have some sharks in the area.
Undoubtedly a skinny-water favorite, the resident Redfish is happy to chase down a plug any day of the year. With unparalleled stamina and a reel-smoking tenacity, Redfish is certainly the king of Tampa Bay flats.

Naturally, Tarpon tops the list for most fly fisherfolk. Most captains recommend using 10-12 weight fly rods, just in case you come across a trophy-sized ‘Poon. If you prefer to use lighter rods, Snook and Seatrout are definitely the go-to species.

“Fish today get a lot of pressure, so to get bites, drop in leader strength and hook sizes. For example, when we used to live-bait for sailfish, 80-pound fluorocarbon leaders were standard and 50-pound leaders were used by those in the know. Today, 40 is the new 50. We’re using lighter leaders on sailfish and circle hooks one to two sizes smaller to get them to bite.”
Near the end of the pier, Kevin Chiem is using a sabiki rig to catch greenbacks for bait. Chiem, 30, is a Skyway pier regular. He travels from Tampa at least once a week to see what’s biting in some of the most active water a Tampa Bay fishing pier has to offer.
We have expectations of only catching a few fish. They where exceeded ten fold. We started small with shephead to make sure we got some fish. Then we stepped it up from species to species and did amazing on all. Steve is a great guy…More

Rapidly increasing water temperatures have migratory fish moving toward the bay area. Typically, schools of coastal pelagic fish such as cobia and mackerel do not return until late March. This year, they are way ahead of schedule. Cobia are one of th…
After seeing the healthy grass flats from the window seat of many flights while descending towards Tampa International Airport (who would have ever guessed you could find fishing spots from a commercial airline flight), I finally decided to venture out there to see if they held redfish, snook, and/or trout.
Summer-like temperatures have encouraged snook to leave the safe haven of their wintering haunts for surrounding grass flats and their mangrove shorelines. The snook are looking to bulk up after an extremely cold January and at the right time and tid…
The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.
