Tampa Bay Fishing waters come in from several locations creating a dynamic inshore fishery. The tidal flows and water flows come together to create amazing differences in the sea floor. At the same time this mix of currents and tides create a highly active fishery with “fish highways.”

The answer is the first-class inshore game fishing, of course! You will absolutely love fighting Snook. Once these Tampa Bay superstars are on the line, they put up quite the fight. They are a must for any experienced fisherman and a “bucket list” catch for any beginner angler. Search for Snook on a summer evening. There are huge numbers of impressively large Snook being taken from the Port Manatee channel in Tampa Bay every year. Or you can pursue Redfish out on the flats, mangroves, and underwater structures. Those tough fighters are just unrelenting when hooked. Or to be more precise, IF hooked – Redfish are often referred to as the fish that won’t quit.

St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.

Flounder made a tremendous presence in 2011. Exceptional numbers of some fairly large flounder were caught, mostly on jigs and lures that could be worked on the bottom. Catching flounder is not difficult, providing you are fishing where the fish are. Passes and artificial reefs are some of the most productive areas to find flounder. The edges of the ICW that run out of Cannon’s Marina and head to Longboat Pass can hold good numbers of “flatties.” Artificial lures, like jigs, work best. Maintain contact with the bottom with your jig as much as possible. Twitch the jig with your rod tip down, forcing the jig to move minimally across the bottom, kicking up small puffs of mud as the lure moves. This action attracts attention from flounder that may be following your jig.

For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano—all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1⁄4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)

Great question. Because of the air and water temperatures, August is the worst month to fish. When the water is hot, the oxygen content of the water is low, making certain gamefish like Snook, Trout, and Redfish more difficult to catch. The following are a few tips you can use to increase your chances and find places that are more comfortable for the fish.
