Tampa Bay is world renowned for some of the best light tackle inshore fishing. This region includes the pristine flats of the various bays making up the greater Tampa Bay, along with deep channel cuts leading into the Port of Tampa. Tarpon, the “Silver King,” are plentiful in Tampa Bay. They often weigh more than 100 pounds with some occasionally topping 200 pounds – a real thrill on light pound test line. The Tampa area is also famous for spearfishing. An abundance of large game fish, such as cobia, snapper, kingfish, bonito, mackerel and grouper, can be found in the Gulf waters.

The Ed Alber Tarpon Rodeo Tournament has come! Tarpon are the star of the show. Redfish are all over the flats and mangrove shorelines. Spanish Mackerel and Mangrove Snapper invade the bay and Trout are feeding on the grass flats.

My husband, my 12 year old daughter and I booked a 3/4 day fishing trip with capt. Chet and had a brilliant day. We have been coming to Tampa/Clearwater for the last 5 years and have booked various private charters but this trip was definitely the best we’ve had! Capt Chet was very patient and accommodating with our daughter and had her catching fish all day. We stopped over a spot and were constantly catching jack crevalle, trout and mackerel. My husband really wanted to try and catch a tarpon so Chet took us to a spot where he thought was our best chance to catch one but unfortunately we had no luck. We are back in sept and will definitely be booking another trip with Chet!

2 At Madeira Beach, “The hogfish bite is still going strong despite the full moon from a depth of 40-60 feet. Deeper offshore, the tuna are thick, but it’s been difficult getting to them with the weather. The snapper bite has been good. The moon has the fish on the move and the good weather has them chewing,” reports Capt. Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina (727-393-1947).

Although high-grade conventional saltwater reels and rods provide the necessary backbone for big game anglers fishing offshore, those who are just beginning to fish in saltwater are better off starting out with a quality medium weight spinning combo. Unless you are already well versed in the art of casting a conventional reel, a spinning reel will help you to cast further while avoiding the frustrating backlashes and bird’s nests that are inherent with conventional gear. A quality spinning combo that is rated for 10 to 25 test line will also cover you in a variety of different venues from surf and pier fishing to drifting in bays or intertidal estuaries.

  1. January fishing has had consistent with catches of Sea Trout, Sheepshead, Black drum, Pompano, and a few Redfish. We have been fishing in between cold fronts, but when its not blowing we’re fishing! We have mainly been fishing with live shrimp and some artificial lures. If you prefer lures over bait just let me know! Here are some pics from the first half of the month.
December Fishing Report for the Clearwater, Clearwater Beach, St.Pete Beach, and Tampa Bay Area. We have been targeting Trout, Redfish, and Snook for most of December with good results. Live shrimp, Sardines, and Artificial lures have been working. Most days we are just doing half day charters, but a few anglers have been doing full days. Here are some pics from recently.
