8: In the north end of Tampa Bay, “Snook are in their usual fall season spots. Most of the fish are small, but on Thursday we had a 29-inch fish, and two just over 34 inches,” reports Capt. Jay Plastic of Stealth Fishing Charters. (813-494-2048). Small redfish are being caught in the creeks and on the oyster bars. Trout are in the deeper holes. Most fish are small, but a few keepers up to 19 inches are being caught. “This upcoming cold front should really get the trout bite going,” reports Plastic.
Fished with Ken in November 2015 with a friend and had an awesome experience so I decided to take my teenage son fishing before school starts. We drove down from Charleston SC and we had another awesome experience. Ken worked very hard to make sure…More
Booked a 7a-11a trip with Captain Anthony. We arrived at 6:40 and he had his boat in the water and was all set to go. Anthony is very friendly and easy to talk to. He put us over a reef where we caught silver trout and some sea bass. He then took us to some vacant docks where we caught sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, and multiple sheepshead. Fun trip, will hope to book another trip in the future.
Red Drum typically congregate in many of the same places as Trout and Snook. If you’re looking for monster Reds though, they usually rally a few miles off the beaches or near the various ship channels. Happy hunting!
For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano—all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1⁄4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)
The big boy of the bunch, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the mouth of Tampa Bay and links Pinellas to Manatee County. The original Skyway was demolished years ago after a phosphate barge hit one of the main span pilings during a squall. The north and southbound approach lanes were capped and converted into state park fishing piers.
Bridges carry folks from Point A to Point B, but how about Point Sea? You have to get out of your vehicle for that one, but sling a bait under one of these people pathways and you’ll find angling action aplenty. Here’s your quick primer on fishing Tampa Bay bridges.
At Homosassa, offshore, anglers are catching big kingfish, gag grouper and catch and release amberjack. Inshore, the trout bite has been good, but the redfish have been fair. The inshore rock piles are good for keeper gag grouper, Spanish mackerel, and grunts. “This may all change if the upcoming cold front drops the Gulf water temperatures three to six degrees. Most inshore fish will move back to deeper water in passes, deep-water creeks, and coastal rivers that will hold the warmer water,” said Toney.
The Skyway is not the only place for boat-less souls to land a fish. There is good wade fishing leading up to the bridge, as well as the areas around the Courtney Campbell Causeway and the Gandy Bridge. Fort De Soto Park has good wade fishing, as well as two piers. The Redington Long Pier off Redington Beach has been a go-to spot for pier fishermen for over 50 years.
When storing your motor for a long period oftime (for example, at the end of the boating season), it is recommended that you take yourmotor to your authorized Suzuki Marine Dealer. However, if you choose to prepare the motor forstorage yourself, follow the procedure outlinedbelow:
The waters are still a bit cooler than the kind a bunch of fish like to aggressively chew in. Fishing conditions, however, have slowly but surely begun to improve. On a recon mission Tuesday, I visited both Sunshine Skyway bridge fishing piers and th…

Actually, most that have fished both Tampa Bay & Boca Grande will tell you the bite in Tampa Bay is even better with more opportunities to actually Land a Giant Tarpon.
Among the wide spectrum of viable saltwater fishing venues that are available, perhaps the best of these for beginning saltwater anglers to start honing their skills is on a public fishing pier. Many offer free access, and they provide the opportunity to either fish closer to the shoreline or go out to the end of the pier in search of different, and often larger species. Depending upon where the pier is located and the time of year it is, fishing the furthest end of the structure could result in hooking up with a fat grouper or a king mackerel without even getting your feet wet.
Yes sir, you missed one for sure, never leave without at least one Bill Lewis RAT-L-TRAP. I find the gold chrome with a black back or silver chrome with a blue back catches a ton of fish. 1/2 or 5/8 ounce size is about right..
Is one better than the other? Absolutely not. Some people prefer to be close to land while others love seeing 360 degrees of horizon around them. Preference plays a huge part, but it’s just one of many.
Blistering Heat = “Good Fishing!” “Air Conditioned Holes “R” Comfort Zone for Fish” When the summer heat rolls into Florida’s waterways, many fishermen find themselves catching more sun and less fish….
Tampa Bay has some of the best places to fish in the state – even if you never set foot on a boat. Landlubbers can cast a line from dozens of beaches or bridges (watch for other fishermen and learn the best times and baits from them) as well as multiple piers where fishing is the top activity.
Position yourself according to the water’s direction. You may want to sling a bait under the bridge and let it drift back out; other times, the current will help you position a bait at just the right point.
