… throughout inter-coastal waterways with spectacular restaurants and wildlife, till we reach the Venice jetty, where we would suit up and head out into the gulf of Mexico to one of our fishing holes..

“You have to be patient,” Chiem said. “You can catch fish out here, grouper, snapper, mackerel. People don’t think you can catch grouper out here but you can. You just have to know what you’re doing and be patient.”
Trout fishing closures have been eliminated as of February 1 for the entire state, so this means that the trout season is open for take recreational anglers. Strong management practices for this fish have allowed the additional months of open season without reducing the numbers of fish to the point where it would negatively affect the SPR (spawning potential ratio). Speckled trout are pretty tasty. I have one client who says this is his favorite eating fish, so I am often on the hunt for it. Speckled trout are available on most grass flats. Look for those with good moving water – that’s where you’ll find the best action. Sarasota Bay is a top spot for these fish. Longboat Pass and New Pass areas bring strong water flow into the areas in between, and the grass flats west of the canal going into Cannon’s Marina are some of the best for trout fishing. The Sister Keys and the flats to the south and east of that area and north to Jewfish Key just inside Longboat Pass are awesome places to start looking for trout. If you use live shrimp under a popping cork or a DOA Deadly Combo, you will quickly reach your trout limit.

Since this was my first time fishing this area, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. There is a wide variety of fish, and they are EVERYWHERE. I don’t know how the rest of the year is, but March 2018 was a fantastic trip for me. I caught 20 fish in a 4-hour charter, including four different kinds of fish, and I just finished dinner made from part of my catch.

Gag grouper and Red Grouper are two favorite bottom reef fish species in the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa Bay is home to both species and they are available year round if you know where to find them. In this video segment I show you the best method to catching keeper grouper in Tampa Bay. If you live in an area with a similar bottom structure this will also apply to you.
Most pilings bear numbers for maintenance reference. Keep track of where you caught fish and note specific points such as piling design, compass directions and any particular markings such as ropes, graffiti or excessive pelican guano.
Towerboaters will want to pay particular attention to clearance, and stay alert for the sudden lift of waves. You might have plenty of room while sitting still, but let a big boat or ship send 3-foot swells under your boat and you’ll run out of space in a hurry.
Spring-like conditions have fired up a bite that a couple of weeks ago was practically nonexistent. Water temperatures in the mid 70s have mangrove snapper, grouper, triggerfish and hogfish aggressively chewing again in the 40- to 50-foot range. With …
Incredible snook fishing has begun – Tampa Bay is fishing like a champ as water temps continue to climb higher. The snook bite is outrageous on high water right now. Soft plastics and live pilchards will get the job done. The fly fishing for snook is also fantastic. To learn about Tampa more…
Inshore Snook, Redfish, and Trout have all been caught on recent fishing charters. Snook season is open and we have been catching slot fish. Snook slot size is 28″-33″. Redfish are getting caught on most charter. We have been free lining live sardines around oyster beds, and cut baiting around docks with good success. Trout fishing is also getting better by the day, and the size of the fish are increasing as they come in from offshore and gather in shallows.
Anglers can expect to target Florida’s most sought after inshore species of game fish: Snook, Redfish and Speckled Trout. Other species can be targeted too, though; Our Captains target Mangrove Snapper, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Tripletail and Jack Crevalle.

Perhaps one of the most underrated Bay fish, Black Drum are incredibly fun to catch. Also, as they can be anything from a few pounds to 90lb+ monsters, you never know what you may find on the other end of the line. Typically found in larger concentrations throughout the winter months, they’re a sucker for shrimp and gather around docks and in shallow waters.
July’s Fishing Charter Report for Clearwater Beach, St.Pete Beach, and Tampa bay has been a mixed bag of snapper, sharks, redfish, snook, trout, and a few others being caught. July is a Hot month and fishing can vary day to day depending on the heat and rain, but we are still Catching!!!

Drifting live pilchards or threadfins downcurrent past pilings is a popular tarpon tactic, but don’t hesitate to fire down a small greenie on a light hook and splitshot. Mangrove snapper and the occasional grouper feed around bridge pilings just like they do on ledges, limestone outcroppings and coral reefs.
Fishing in Tampa Bay is diverse. From inshore and backcountry fishing for snook, redfish, sea trout and tarpon, to the nearshore zone for snapper, kingfish, grouper, permit, and cobia – Fishing in the state of Florida really doesn’t get any better than what you will find right here in Tampa Bay.

Redfish schools have started to invade the flats. They have seemed to pass up the Skyway bridge area and head into upper Tampa Bay. I start early in the morning by throwing my 12-foot custom cast net under one of the many bridges. I pick the brightes…

The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.
