Tampa Flats and Bay Fishing Charters, based in Tampa, provides people from the area with in-shore and offshore fishing experiences. The company includes a single captain, Steve Betz, who spends more than 200 days per year navigating the Tampa Bay’s waters. Mr. Betz, who has been saltwaterfishing for over three decades, earns praise from passengers for providing fishers of all ages and skill levels with a fun, rewarding experience.

Clearwater Beach has been packed with both people and Snook! Snook have made there annual visit out the the gulf beaches and passes to spawn. The snook have been stacked up together and have been eating live grunts on both incoming and outgoing tide. Sea trout have also been hanging in the passes and just off the gulf beaches. Shark fishing has also been productive on recent charters. We have been catching black tips, bonnet heads, Atlantic sharp noises, most have been in the 2-5′ range, and sharks offer great table fair!

Tampa Bay is fed by well over a 100 inland tributaries. In these you will find brackish water rivers and creeks that allow for some of the best backcountry fishing action in the state. This also provides temperate waters for game fish to congregate in when water temps change in the bay.

Tampa Bay’s Snook and Redfish bite has been has hot! Inside the bay snook are bunching back up for the spawn, and the redfish are schooled up as well make for some fun fishing. Snook have been averaging anywhere from 20”-30” with a few large biting as well. Redfish have been top of the slot size 27” or even as large as 36” and we are catching them in shallow water 2′ or less. Live bait and Cut bait have both been working well. Trout fishing has also be outstanding, and getting a for a fresh fish dinner hasn’t been a problem.

Fishing is the most popular recreational pastime in America; it boasts more active enthusiasts than golf, tennis and sailing combined. Saltwater fishing alone draws in nearly 25 million participants nationwide in a single year. Whether it be trolling offshore for big tuna, drifting across a placid bay for flounder or fishing the skinny water of the intertidal flats for redfish and trout, the plurality of venues and fish species available to saltwater anglers can seem virtually endless.

In Tampa Bay Tarpon fishing has been good for smaller tarpon in the 5-20lb range. Live bait has been what we have mainly been fishing with, but these are awesome fish for the 8 weight fly rod and a small popper fly. We have been also been catching mangrove snapper in the bay, and these fish are excellent table fair. While they are on smaller side (10”-16”) they are abundant and they do put up a decent fight for there size. The snapper bag limit is 5 fish per person. Black Drum have also made a good showing in the TampaBay and there have been a few schools with 100-500 fish in the school. The black drum are Huge and will really test your tackle.

Today my girlfriend and I went on a fishing trip with Captain Anthony and Joey, it was a gift for her birthday. Both were great guys and gave us a true quality experience. It was a new experience for …both of us. My girlfriend reeled in 2 sharks and a pufferfish. I caught 2 mackerel and a cobia. The cobia was actually Captain Anthony’s line but he gave it to me when it hooked so I could bring him in. Then they even filleted and bagged the fish for us to take home. We took them to a restaurant to eat fresh. Perfect day thanks to Pocket Change Inshore Fishing Charters See More

Use south winds to your advantage and work the shore lines. The Redfish bite can be pretty good, with chances of catching Trout and Snook. Small Black Drum and Sheepshead can also make an occasional appearance.
These structures provide fish much-needed shade, good ambush points with current dynamics and lots of forage species. More or less an emergent reef, a bridge gives anglers a clear target to fish and the ability to move up or down a few pilings to locate the bite. Common targets include tarpon, cobia, pompano, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, redfish, black drum, speckled trout and snook. Spanish mackerel and bluefish make seasonal appearances, and ladyfish are always a possibility.

“Had a great time fishing with Capt Jason. Jason put us on the fish and it was non-stop action right from the moment we put our lines in the water. Myself, my 17 yr old daughter, and her friend just hooked fish after fish. Reds, spanish mackerel, jacks, sea trout, and silver trout just to name a few. Capt Jason put us on a school of reds that just wore us out!”
The hooks that are usually employed for saltwater application include the J hook, the live bait hook and the circle hook, each of which has its own specialized application. The J hook can either be a ‘baitholder’ with a few barbs on the shank or a standard J with a smooth shank. These are best for fishing with chunk or strip bait and allow you to hook the bait multiple times in order to keep it secure.
