Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.

Winter Time Fishing is as Good as it Gets! – Last weeks cooler temperatures pushed a lot of the fish closer to their winter time hide outs. With winter time low tides, this typically means the fish are grouped tighter together, and once located we tend to catch a lot in one hole. White bait more…

Fishing is the most popular recreational pastime in America; it boasts more active enthusiasts than golf, tennis and sailing combined. Saltwater fishing alone draws in nearly 25 million participants nationwide in a single year. Whether it be trolling offshore for big tuna, drifting across a placid bay for flounder or fishing the skinny water of the intertidal flats for redfish and trout, the plurality of venues and fish species available to saltwater anglers can seem virtually endless.

7: At St. Petersburg, good numbers of bluefish have been feeding on trout in lower Tampa Bay. There’s a few redfish around the oyster bars near channels that dump water off the flats. Snook are moving into the backcountry, residential canals, and up the rivers and creeks. The trout bite is very good coming off the full moon and will only get better with the cold front. The sheepshead bite is also picking up as they continue to show themselves in greater numbers. Rock piles along the coast, in Tampa Bay, and around the Gandy and Howard Frankland Bridges are good areas to target, reports Capt. Ray Markham of Backwater Promotions (941-723-2655).

Anchor uptide of a bridge and hang a chum block off your stern to amass enticing bait schools and provide predators a scent trail to follow. Snapper will rise from the pilings, mackerel will swarm the area and you’ll probably raise a few cobia and sharks. Supplementing a chumline with freshly cut threadfin herring chunks can jumpstart a good bite.

Strong pro-ethanol advocates are pushing the Obama Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase ethanol levels in gasoline to 15% (E15). As you may have read in BoatUS Magazine, ethanol at the currently allowed 10% (E10) level has been shown to cause significant problems for some marine engines and boat fuel systems. This is a seasonal favorite as every summer these silver kings migrate through the area. 2 At Madeira Beach, “The hogfish bite is still going strong despite the full moon from a depth of 40-60 feet. Deeper offshore, the tuna are thick, but it’s been difficult getting to them with the weather. The snapper bite has been good. The moon has the fish on the move and the good weather has them chewing,” reports Capt. Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina (727-393-1947).

Booked with Anthony and first mate Joe for four of us. What a great time and went to a couple different spots and caught fish. Did best out in the bay. Top notch guys! Caught one snook, redfish, sheepsh…ead, grouper. Will return for sure. Thanks guys! See More

This is also how the area manages to cater to anglers of virtually all ages and skill levels. Anything from a 2lb Pompano to a 200lb+ trophy Tarpon can be caught on the local waterways. It all depends on the type of experience you’re after.

St.Pete Beach has also been providing similar action to Clearwater beach, and the Redfish have been providing consistent action for charter trips we have done lately. St. Pete is a great area to fish out of because of the action at the mouth of the bay which means every fish that goes in and out of the bay have to pass St.Pete beach going between Egmount Key and Ft.Desoto Park, if you would like to fish any of these areas specifically just let me know.

For diverse fishing opportunities, you can’t beat Fort DeSoto County Park. Start with the Gulf Pier stretching more than 1,000 feet into the Bay near the open waters of the Gulf. A strong tidal current attracts bait fish, which in turn bring in the big fish — everything from king mackerel to tarpon and sharks. (You’re also likely to see at least a couple of dolphin frolicking nearby.)

Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.

  1. Towerboaters will want to pay particular attention to clearance, and stay alert for the sudden lift of waves. You might have plenty of room while sitting still, but let a big boat or ship send 3-foot swells under your boat and you’ll run out of space in a hurry.
But why is that exactly? What is it about the greater Tampa Bay area that makes it one of the nation’s most prolific fish traps? Well, as it turns out, being the largest open-water estuary in all of the Sunshine State definitely comes with its perks.
