Florida Inshore Angler.com was created by Allen Applegarth to provide Florida inshore saltwater fishing anglers with saltwater fishing tips, saltwater fishing reports, how tos, fishing videos, fishing and boating related product reviews, and a forum for anglers and other outdoor activities such as camping and hunting. A few years after establishing this saltwater fishing site in 2007, I decided to write another book based on Florida inshore fishing, fittingly named after this site. Depending on my available time limitations, my new title should be published in 2013-14.

3: At John’s Pass, Spanish mackerel are still around the pass, but the bite is better a little further south. Pompano are still on the beaches. “This week some nice pompano were caught from the north jetty on Nekid Ball Jigz,” reports Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina (727-393-1947). Snook fishing is still good around the docks inside John’s Pass on the outgoing tide. “The sheepshead bite is good and will only get better with the upcoming front,” reports Hubbard.
When you head out to the beach, bay, lagoon or jetty there are a few other items that you might want to consider taking along as well as your fishing gear, a well-stocked tackle box and a bucket. These include a hat, polarized sunglasses, a high SPF sunscreen, a folding chair and sufficient drinking water or electrolyte beverages to rehydrate yourself under a potentially blazing sun. There is, however, one additional thing that you should always bring along with you on your fishing adventure; and that is patience.
September Fishing has been good! Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard, but didn’t hit Clearwater beach, St. Pete beach, or Tampa Bay. While many people lost power here I was on vacation in Venice,Louisiana catching Bull Redfish! I came home the second week of the month and the Snook, Redfish, trout, mackerel and many others were ready to bite, and the weather has been perfect with no wind or rain!
Once you hit thirty meters deep, you are offshore, in the deep water fishing zone. Here, the boats get more robust, the fish harder to reel in, and the equipment more sturdy. Your small motorboat is traded for a charter or large fishing vessel, and you are therefore in the running to catch some serious fish. The fishing becomes more athletic and less of a relaxing day out on the boat. (Of course, you can always relax offshore, too … you just may get interrupted with an intense haul.) It’s safe to say that offshore has more variables, more of the unknown, and a lot more potential physical exertion.

Tampa Bay fishing charters have been catching lots of Snook, a few reds, and limits of trout. The bay fishing is about to get really good as soon as the first cold fronts hit and the fish push into the bay, and for the anglers that will be here for this we will have 50-100 fish days fishing for snook and reds.
Where found: OFFSHORE species associated with rocky reefs, debris, and wrecks, typically in 60 – 240 feet of water; sometimes caught NEARSHORE in south Florida; juveniles associated with floating objects and may occur in water less than 30 feet deep.

The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.
“It’s really relaxing to come out here and fish,” said Jamie Messina, 42, of Tampa. “It’s nice coming out here at night when the lights are on and you have the view of the city. You can catch jacks and angel fish. I’ve even seen some small hammerhead (sharks) caught here.”

Not only is fishing during the night convenient, it also makes sense. Most species are nocturnal and prefer to feed when the sun comes down. This rings especially true during the hottest months of the year.

If you are a boater, fisherman, diver, either recreational or commercial or if you care about our energy resources and other natural resources that are available in or from the oceans then you should be VERY concerned over this ‘National Ocean Policy”.
Clearwater Beach has been packed with both people and Snook! Snook have made there annual visit out the the gulf beaches and passes to spawn. The snook have been stacked up together and have been eating live grunts on both incoming and outgoing tide. Sea trout have also been hanging in the passes and just off the gulf beaches. Shark fishing has also been productive on recent charters. We have been catching black tips, bonnet heads, Atlantic sharp noises, most have been in the 2-5′ range, and sharks offer great table fair!
Tampa fishing and its inshore potential have long been renowned way beyond The Sunshine State. These waters are brimming with the likes of Snook, Redfish, and Tarpon during most of the year, with a wide range of smaller Shark species to keep you busy on even the slowest of days. In fact, there’s such a variety of species cruising the Tampa flats year-round, you’d be seriously hard-pressed to find a local fishing guide that recalls the last time he and his guests came back from the trip empty-handed. But don’t take our word for it!
Throughout most of the year, the species are caught in very shallow grass flats, up to 3ft. deep. Even though most fisheries go in deep hibernation during the winter months, the tailing Reds of Tampa Bay remain very much active. That said, they usually migrate to deeper waters at this time, normally between 4 and 8 feet.
6: At Anna Maria, the kingfish bite near shore from three to seven miles is still really good. There’s not many Spanish mackerel, but there’s a good amount of little tunny mixed in with them. On the reefs, there’s mangrove snapper and few flounder. Inshore, there’s still a few snook in the passes, but most have made a big run for their winter spots such as the rivers and creeks. “Trout fishing is on fire. Big trout are with the schools of mullet with some scattered redfish as well. There’s also schools of bluefish four to six pounds all over Sarasota Bay,” reports Capt. Scott Moore of Bradenton (941-713-1921).
Thank you very much for the kind review. That was a very tough day not having the best of conditions. I wish we could of fished some more area but with the windy conditions we were limited. I hope to see you guys again in…More
“Always study the bottom on your fish finder when running to and from the grounds, and even when fishing. You will discover new spots this way. When I see an interesting area, I save it in my GPS. It’s these little finds that often pay big dividends, as they’re not likely pressured like the more heralded spots. I also want to know what the ocean features are like, i.e. temperature breaks, rips, etc. I want to immerse myself with the workings of the environment. You need to get in a fish’s head.”

Enjoyed all the information in this article. Our trip will be in February 2018. I normally fish fresh water lakes in several states for bass and specs and have enjoyed many years of fishing Lake Erie for walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass. Looking forward to learning the different spices in and around the bay. God bless and happy fishing Al Osborne.
Redfish schools have started to invade the flats around Pinellas Point. On low tide in the morning, I look for a school on an outer sandbar. These fish are staged on the edge waiting for the tide to come in. Once the water level rises, the fish will …

“In addition to being a huge conservation tool that limits the chances of hooking a fish deeply, inline circle hooks actually catch more fish. When set properly, it’s difficult for a fish to shake it — and that provides great peace of mind when that tarpon, big snook or sailfish takes to the air.”
Recreational fishermen usually fish either from a boat or from a shoreline or river bank. When fishing from a boat, or fishing vessel, most fishing techniques can be used, from nets to fish traps, but some form of angling is by far the most common. Compared to fishing from the land, fishing from a boat allows more access to different fishing grounds and different species of fish.
As the sun beats down in another sweltering summer afternoon, a handful of fishing optimists cast lines off the north Skyway fishing pier. With the tide ripping out into the Gulf of Mexico, baits are drifted into the 20- to 25-foot deep water.
Annual recreational fishing licenses and permits are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase or the alternate starting date if selected at the time of purchase, unless otherwise specified on the face of the license.
