As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf.

Just don’t dangle your feet over the side, as warmer months find loads of sharks patrolling the pilings. On a particularly memorable outing, we were treated to a glowing green light show as millions of planktonic players erupted with bioluminescence as our boat moved through their masses. The crescendo came under the Gandy Bridge when a line of cruising tarpon suddenly bolted as an honest 12-foot figure passed maybe a rod length from the bow.

Red Drum typically congregate in many of the same places as Trout and Snook. If you’re looking for monster Reds though, they usually rally a few miles off the beaches or near the various ship channels. Happy hunting!
Clearwater Beach has had a good Redfish bite, along with a good number of trout and some nice sharks. Redfish have been biting best on the early morning high tides for us and for anglers looking to target these fish we haven’t been have any issues finding them! Trout fishing has also been really good fishing over deep grass flats near the passes. And the sharks have been biting good on fresh dead bait while we have been catching other fish.
If it swims, it’s in these waters. The Bay provides such a wide variety of aquatic life, it’s not uncommon to bag more than a dozen species on any given outing. The mighty Snook prowls the mangrove shorelines. Schools of tailing Redfish rest on the glassy grass flats. And the notorious Florida Tarpon roam the Bay’s endless passes. Whatever you’re after, it’s never more than a cast away.
As its name implies, offshore fishing is done away from the shore over deep water. An offshore fishing expedition provides a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the world in addition to an exciting catching experience. Bass and shark are some of the top catches on offshore expeditions.
St.Pete Beach fishing has been providing plenty of action for anglers visiting this area. Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, trout, and sharks have all been around and willing to bite over the last few weeks. Tarpon fishing is starting to get good, the fish were a little late this year, but they are finally here and the bite is getting better daily. Tarpon fishing trips are limited to only one trip per day as it is a full day charter. Snook, Redfish, and Trout are also providing a steady bite on the inshore flats around ft.desoto park. Live sardine have been abundant and the fish are willing to strike. If you have kids the small sharks have been around they they loving them! Give me a call if you want to get out

To truly experience bowfishing in all its glory, many Captains recommend opting for a nightly excursion. While daytime trips average around 50 shots per ‘angler’, that number can as much as double once it goes dark.
Kenny is a born and raised Tampa native. He started as a child fishing bass ponds with his father, quickly picked up quite the technique for it and his love for fishing grew. As he got older he picked up inshore fishing. It wasn’t as easy as the old ponds in the neighborhood, but he learned quickly, researching info, techniques and learning Tampa Bay’s estuary. From North to South of the Bay, he knows where to go to put you on fish.
“Have a variety of tackle rigged to capitalize on any situation (that) may arise, whether you are an inshore or offshore angler. For example, I’ll have several spinning rods rigged with plain circle hooks, bucktails and a top-water chugger, plus an assortment of dead (squid, ballyhoo) and live bait (pinfish, pilchards, etc.). If we’re running out and spot a cobia, or if we are bottom or drift fishing and a cobia, dolphin or even a sailfish swims by, we have several rods we can quickly get to, and baits; we’ve an excellent shot at catching that fish. The worst scenario is seeing fish pop up and you have nothing rigged to take advantage of it.”
Winter Time Fishing Tampa Bay! – Fishing in Tampa Bay is still pretty good despite the cold weather. Fortunately, the water temperature hasn’t dropped too much yet and there is still plenty of bait around. Some days the fish will chew great and other days they just won’t eat more…
Further defining the proximity variables, a recent trip with Capt. Chuck Rogers of Tampa found us hovering under the Gandy and pulling a few mangrove snapper from the pilings. When the action slowed, we moved outside and did the anchor-and-chum routine. Rogers noted the wisdom of fanning a bridge section to locate the sweet spot. Once we dialed in the spot, several keeper mangos hit the ice.
The nearshore charters in Tampa, Fl offer an expanded list of targeted species. The border between what would be considered inshore and offshore offers an amazing assortment of fish species. Pushing a little further out, you can expect to hook up with Permit on structure, Kingfish in the pelagic zone, and Grouper working the bottoms. Let Flats & Bay handle your next nearshore fishing charter! From migrating Pelagics to bottom dwelling Grouper and Sharks – This trip never ceases to be one of the best when the weather and conditions permit it.
The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.
Fishing in Tampa Bay is diverse. From inshore and backcountry fishing for snook, redfish, sea trout and tarpon, to the nearshore zone for snapper, kingfish, grouper, permit, and cobia – Fishing in the state of Florida really doesn’t get any better than what you will find right here in Tampa Bay.

Sheepshead will be coming into their spawn around the full moon beginning in February. Some of the largest sheepies of the year are usually caught during the next two months. They are a tough catch on artificial lures, but tipping jigs with a small thumbnail size morsel of fresh shrimp can add to your mixed winter bag of fish. You’ll find the bulk of these fish around boat docks and structure, like the many artificial reefs that were made from the rubble of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

About the author: I was born a commercial fisherman’s daughter in Cortez, an old fishing village off the west coast of Florida where you can still experience “Old Florida” and get a really good grouper sandwich. I went to school and became an anesthetist, after privileged years of practice, I jumped ship to work in the family business – Cannons Marina. I love my job and the view. I am crazy about my dog Gnarly. Being out on the water is magical. I still get giddy every time I see a dolphin. Often I brag that I had the opportunity to swim alongside a humpback whale – it was freaky and pretty amazing. My life is no doubt boating, but I also love paddle-boarding cooking and travel.
Spring-like conditions have fired up a bite that a couple of weeks ago was practically nonexistent. Water temperatures in the mid 70s have mangrove snapper, grouper, triggerfish and hogfish aggressively chewing again in the 40- to 50-foot range. With …

In addition to the excellent snook fishing in Tampa Bay, you can also fish for these beauties in other parts of the Gulf of Mexico and some of the Atlantic waters surrounding Florida. Snook prefer warm waters, so they can typically only be found in the southern half of the state. Their limited range, plus the restrictions on fishing snook in Florida that are in place for much of the year, make snook a prize catch for any angler.
