St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.

The Tampa/St. Pete Beach area waters are abundant with Tarpon (Captain Kevin’s specialty), Snook, Redfish, Trout, and more, providing year-round flats fishing opportunities found nowhere else. Fishing the St. Petersburg flats or the gulf waters of St Pete Beach, you’ll catch them. With Captain Kevin as your guide, a fishing veteran who has been hired by fellow fishermen numerous times as a private fishing consultant, your St. Pete Beach fishing trip is going to be a memorable one. Guaranteed!

Night fishing is always a bonus, as bridge lights attract baitfish, which draw in predators. From June through October, tarpon patrol the shadowlines of most Tampa Bay bridges and anglers drifting live baitfish or accurately casting MirrOlures, D.O.A. Baitbusters and swimbaits will put a few nocturnal ‘poons in the air.

Remarks: spawns primarily in summer; cannot tolerate water temperatures below 60 degrees F; can tolerate wholly fresh or saltwater; schools along shore and in passes during spawning season; feeds on fish and large crustaceans.

Depending upon the type of saltwater fish that you are targeting, the most effective baits are usually the ones that most closely match the normal diet of that species. This might be anything from clams, mussels and sea worms to shrimp, squid and appropriately sized baitfish. Many fish will also strike chunk and strip baits, which tend to exude enticing oils through the water column.

As the weather gets warmer, sometimes it’s just more fun to wade fish. Grab a pair of sneakers and light fishing tackle, then cast into the channels that cut through lush seagrass beds. Be careful not to trample through seagrasses though – they’re critical habitat for almost nearly every fish in Tampa Bay.

2 At Madeira Beach, “The hogfish bite is still going strong despite the full moon from a depth of 40-60 feet. Deeper offshore, the tuna are thick, but it’s been difficult getting to them with the weather. The snapper bite has been good. The moon has the fish on the move and the good weather has them chewing,” reports Capt. Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina (727-393-1947).

When George Poveromo brings his Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series to Riverview this weekend, he will be sharing some tricks of the trade. Host of George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing on the NBC Sports Network, the international angler will share the stage with some of Florida’s best captains. • But if you can’t wait to hear what this fishing great has to say, here are five tips from him that will not only work in the Gulf of Mexico but anywhere you travel in search of big fish:

St.Pete beach area has been producing good numbers of Tarpon fishing along the beaches and the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The tarpon have been BIG and most of these fish are over 100lbs!!! Tarpon fishing can take some patience to get one on, but once hooked up you are in for the fight of your life. In addition to tarpon there have been decent numbers of snook just off St.Pete beach and blinds pass area. Live bait free lined in the current is a great way to catch these linesiders.

Now these “Gulp! Alive!” shrimp come in a bunch of different colors, but the best two that we have found for consistent bites among most saltwater fish are the white shrimp and the “New Penny” color (below)

Once you get the party rocking, freeline live shrimp, pilchards or threads on 2/0 circle hooks toward the pilings. Let out line in 5-foot increments to “count” back and locate the hot zone. In strong current or choppy conditions, add a splitshot or replace the circle hook with a jighead to keep your bait from kiting too high in the water column.

Cold water Fishing in Tampa Bay – Tampa Bay Fishing Report What a weird weather pattern we’ve dealt with these past few weeks; one week it’s really cold like we’re in the North pole and then it’s back to normal with temps in the mid 60’s to lower 70’s. A lot of people asked what more…

The net affect of this weather was that all Tampa Fishing Guides got a whole lot more vacation days than planned over the course of the last month. On the coldest days, sheepshead were the only logical target.  Although good to eat, the cold air and limited species selection kept most anglers off the water anyway. For those who ventured out, fishing shrimp or small crabs up under docks or against bridge pilings was the ticket.

Captain Anthony was AMAZING! It was myself and my 2 girls (ages 14 and 9). The fish were coming in one after another. They kept the girls busy reeling the fish in and kept it fun! Thanks for the great… time…we will certainly see you again later this year for another memorable trip! Thank you so much! See More

I started the month off on vacation fishing in Venice, Louisiana catching Bull Redfish in the 40” range. These fish are hard pulling and don’t give up. Every year I like to make a fishing trip to Louisiana as they have some amazing fishing there. This year has been the toughest year yet, but I was still able to catch some of the big bulls they have!
