In Tampa Bay Tarpon fishing has been good for smaller tarpon in the 5-20lb range. Live bait has been what we have mainly been fishing with, but these are awesome fish for the 8 weight fly rod and a small popper fly. We have been also been catching mangrove snapper in the bay, and these fish are excellent table fair. While they are on smaller side (10”-16”) they are abundant and they do put up a decent fight for there size. The snapper bag limit is 5 fish per person. Black Drum have also made a good showing in the TampaBay and there have been a few schools with 100-500 fish in the school. The black drum are Huge and will really test your tackle.

Offshore boats are generally much larger than inshore boats, and may need to be moored in a marina. They are sturdily constructed so they can brave the weather and water conditions encountered in open waters. Though they differ in design and purpose and prices vary widely they are generally expensive to build and maintain. Most offshore recreational fishermen charter boats rather than own them. It is often a pastime of the affluent, and there is a demand for charter boats equipped and catered to luxurious excess.
Had a busy second week fishing both the bay and Clearwater harbor area. Fishing was good with Redfish, Trout, Snook and Triple tail being caught. Early in the week I fished out of Safety harbor and we fished for snook and trout. Did good on both, middle of the week I fished for triple tail out of Dunedin Marina, and we started the day by running south along the stone crab traps looking for Triple tail. We ran down from Clearwater beach to sandy key, and made our way down to Johns pass and St.pete beach where we caught a 6 triple tail with 2 shorts, 2 just legal, and 2 jumbos. I finished off the week fishing back over in Dunedin Clearwater area catch trout and a few redfish.

Strong pro-ethanol advocates are pushing the Obama Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase ethanol levels in gasoline to 15% (E15). As you may have read in BoatUS Magazine, ethanol at the currently allowed 10% (E10) level has been shown to cause significant problems for some marine engines and boat fuel systems. Tampa Bay bridges produce year-round but the popularity increases as the thermometer rises. Fish and anglers beat the heat by sticking close to a bridge’s shaded waters. When thunderstorms threaten, a bridge is your umbrella and windbreak. No need to run back to port—just tuck behind the downwind side and ride out the blow.
Undoubtedly a skinny-water favorite, the resident Redfish is happy to chase down a plug any day of the year. With unparalleled stamina and a reel-smoking tenacity, Redfish is certainly the king of Tampa Bay flats.

Keep Live Bait in Tip Top Shape – If you’re using live bait it’s important to keep it in the best shape possible. Make sure to always keep live bait out of direct sunlight and if you have aquatic bait like minnows then make sure to buy a water bait aerator to keep sufficient oxygen levels. If you don’t have an aerator then make sure that you change the water every 2 hours. Warm water can’t hold as much oxygen as cool water.
Large schools of redfish are found swimming through the shallow flats of Tampa Bay during September and October. Bunces Pass has good water flow and features spoil islands and troughs just in the pass with many fine fishing spots for redfish, snapper, trout and snook. The eastern side of Mullet Key offers excellent fishing for redfish.
It’s crazy that different types of lures work on many of the same fish. I really like the look of the white bucktail. I will have to ask my dad if he has ever been saltwater fishing, and what lures he used.
Captain Danny’s inshore fishing charters are packed full of excitement. Just think of hooking that prize Snook in ankle deep water, a 24 inch Trout in the pristine grass flats of Tampa Bay or viewing a Tampa Bay sunset while wade fishing one of the crystal clear back country flats.

It also may be the world’s most convenient fishing pier. Rather than parking and lugging tackle and coolers, you can drive to where you want to fish and just unload your car. It’s also lit at night, so you can fish during the cooler hours of the evening or early morning. Even in the middle of the day, though, ts location at the mouth of the bay means there’s almost always a breeze and it’s easy to put up a tent for shade.
Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the “Friendship Trail,” with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges—along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas)—give landbound anglers access to the bounty below.
