Booked a 7a-11a trip with Captain Anthony. We arrived at 6:40 and he had his boat in the water and was all set to go. Anthony is very friendly and easy to talk to. He put us over a reef where we caught silver trout and some sea bass. He then took us to some vacant docks where we caught sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, and multiple sheepshead. Fun trip, will hope to book another trip in the future.
Each year, the bait-rich waterways of the Gulf attract a wide roster of pelagics and other predatory fish. Surface feeders such as Kingfish, Barracuda, Permit and Dorado all prosper throughout the summer months. Although live bait is preferred, these drag-stripping machines will rarely resist a fine-looking ‘topwater’ either.
Over the past decade or so, the circle hook has become increasingly popular because it tends to hook up in the corner of the fish’s mouth rather than ending up hooked deep in the gullet, which greatly decreases the chances of a successful live release.

Red Drum typically congregate in many of the same places as Trout and Snook. If you’re looking for monster Reds though, they usually rally a few miles off the beaches or near the various ship channels. Happy hunting!
One of the area’s true salts, Hawkins taught me an important tactical point: Fishing a bridge doesn’t necessarily mean hugging the structure. There are times when pompano and other species will feed close to the structure, but consider that the eddies spun by flowing tides can create feeding scenarios 100 yards from the pilings.
Tampa Bay offers some of the World’s BEST tarpon fishing! Forget the crowds of Boca Grande, Plan a Trip to St. Petersburg and enjoy Great tarpon Fishing and St. Petersburg, Florida’s Beaches and either use an uptide rod between 9 and 10 feet in length to cast from the boat or a shorter downtide rod between 6 and 8 feet. Lines are usually between 18 pounds and 50 pounds breaking strain dependent on the species of fish being targeted. Reels are usually multipliers, although fixed spool reels are being used more and more. Baits are similar to those used for beach and rock fishing except they are often larger since larger fish are targeted. The species will include all the beach species, but now also include big conger eels and small sharks like tope and smoothhound.
Just don’t dangle your feet over the side, as warmer months find loads of sharks patrolling the pilings. On a particularly memorable outing, we were treated to a glowing green light show as millions of planktonic players erupted with bioluminescence as our boat moved through their masses. The crescendo came under the Gandy Bridge when a line of cruising tarpon suddenly bolted as an honest 12-foot figure passed maybe a rod length from the bow.
There is also fantastic near shore fishing around many artificial wrecks, and reefs where you’ll find Grouper, Mackerel, Mangrove Snapper and many other species that will make for a great day of fishing!

Use the Right Fishing Knot – The best way to make sure you don’t lose that next world record fish is to make sure you’re using the right knot. You need to learn a fishing knot that can retain 100% of its strength when tied, and only the bimini twist (aka 20 times around know) can do just that. The right knot can make the difference between a big catch, or a big disappointment. For this reason, we strongly recommend keeping the Pro-Knot Saltwater Fishing Knot Manual with you at all times.
With a second set of controls up in the tower, sight fishing ability is greatly enhanced. The net effect is more time spent fishing where the fish are. The tower also increases the chances at getting a good cast at a roving Cobia, Shark or Tarpon that otherwise might not be seen.
