This area is a wonderful place to escape the busy, urban areas and visit old Florida. A shallow draft skiff is needed to reach much of the area’s best fishing. Fly fishing is truly the way to pursue the area’s redfish, trout, and the occasional monster snook. Tarpon also migrate through the waters along the Nature Coast during the spring and summer months.

Other anglers say that inshore fishing is anything within 3 miles of shore, while others say it’s based on the kind of fish you are catching (but I’ve seen people catch pelagics in a few feet of water so this can’t always hold true).

Whether you are sight-fishing inshore for spooky redfish, bonefish or permit or troll offshore for hard-striking billfish, saltwater fishing can take a toll on your tackle. The superior strength of saltwater species combined with saltwater’s high corrosive effects mean you need the best tackle you can afford for continuous success. At TackleDirect, we carry saltwater fishing rods, reels, lures, lines and tackle that will stand up to blazing sun, stormy seas and the natural aggressiveness of the denizens of the deep.

One of the area’s true salts, Hawkins taught me an important tactical point: Fishing a bridge doesn’t necessarily mean hugging the structure. There are times when pompano and other species will feed close to the structure, but consider that the eddies spun by flowing tides can create feeding scenarios 100 yards from the pilings.

Plan your next saltwater fishing adventure with your family and friends. From the coastline to the deep-sea, there are countless saltwater fishing opportunities for all anglers. Learn what type of fishing gear and equipment you need to use based on the species you are trying to catch.

Among the wide spectrum of viable saltwater fishing venues that are available, perhaps the best of these for beginning saltwater anglers to start honing their skills is on a public fishing pier. Many offer free access, and they provide the opportunity to either fish closer to the shoreline or go out to the end of the pier in search of different, and often larger species. Depending upon where the pier is located and the time of year it is, fishing the furthest end of the structure could result in hooking up with a fat grouper or a king mackerel without even getting your feet wet.

Personally, I believe that definition of inshore fishing needs to be slightly altered as fishing “inshore” has changed and evolved drastically over the years since these definitions were created (many years ago).

Warm weather for the past week has led to an increase in feeding activity for inshore fish species. Speckled trout have been venturing out of deep holes and channels and back into shallow water to feed. This has presented a great opportunity to fish …

The waters are still a bit cooler than the kind a bunch of fish like to aggressively chew in. Fishing conditions, however, have slowly but surely begun to improve. On a recon mission Tuesday, I visited both Sunshine Skyway bridge fishing piers and th…

Tidal movement affects just about every type of saltwater fishing venue except the blue waters offshore. In order to optimize your angling it is vital to use the changing of the tides to your advantage. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to arrive at your chosen fishing destination at least an hour before the high tide is scheduled to peak, and plan to continue fishing for at least another half hour thereafter.
