BRRRRR!!! So was this January as cold as it felt? Absolutely! The average temperature range for Tampa in January, per Wikipedia, is 51.2 degrees for a low and 69.5 degrees for a high.  Also, in an average year, there are 4 nights in January where the temperature dips below 40 degrees and 3 days where it passes 80 degrees.  The average temperature range for this January was 48.1 degrees to 67.6 degrees.  There were a whopping 9 nights below 40 degrees and daytime highs didn’t reach 80 degrees once. Although this data would not appear to support the theory that our planet is heating up, 2017 was the hottest year on record in Tampa. Go figure.

The net affect of this weather was that all Tampa Fishing Guides got a whole lot more vacation days than planned over the course of the last month. On the coldest days, sheepshead were the only logical target.  Although good to eat, the cold air and limited species selection kept most anglers off the water anyway. For those who ventured out, fishing shrimp or small crabs up under docks or against bridge pilings was the ticket.

The strength of the knot that connects your main line to the hook or lure is your most important link in successfully fighting a big saltwater bruiser …so make it strong! There are numerous effective knots that can work well in a variety of applications, but one personal favorite is the double palomar; it is both easy to tie and extremely dependable.

Throughout peak migration (May-July), most Tarpon range between 80 and 140 pounds. Still, you’ll probably hear of folks joining the coveted ‘200 club’ every now and again. If you’re specifically booking a Tarpon charter, expect an average of 2-7 hookups per trip. Days with more than 10 hookups are certainly not unheard of, though. In the end, it all depends on your own expertise and a lil’ bit of luck.

The snook (aka Linesider) might be more of a Florida inshore fish, but it certainly deserves a place in the ultimate inshore fishing guide because it is one of the most popular saltwater game fish in the “Fishing Capital of the World”.

A 1⁄4-ounce jig set through the tail of a live shrimp and hopped across the bottom will turn up a diverse selection of bridge residents including redfish, flounder, cobia, sheepshead, black drum, gag grouper, mangrove snapper and juvenile tarpon. Probably the most popular jigging target in local waters is the pompano. Species-specific jigs such as Doc’s Goofy style or small, round-head bucktails tempt the golden nuggets.

Granted, there will be times when you won’t need a leader line while inshore fishing (like if the water massively dirty and dark with no structure around), but 90% of the time you will be better off using a leader while inshore fishing.

• At Fort Pierce, “Snook season opened on the Atlantic coast Thursday and we’ve had one nice, slot 31-inch fish from the inlet already,” reports Clint Walker at the Fishing Center of St. Lucie (772-465-7637). Flounder are starting to bite from the south jetty on live shrimp and jigs tipped with shrimp. There’s lots of sheepshead and black drum being caught in the inlet. On the flats inside, trout are biting in two to four feet of water over grass and redfish are biting around deeper water in the mangroves. “I’ve heard nothing offshore, it’s been too windy,” Walker says.

Redfish schools have started to invade the flats around Pinellas Point. On low tide in the morning, I look for a school on an outer sandbar. These fish are staged on the edge waiting for the tide to come in. Once the water level rises, the fish will …

Tampa Bay has an overall average depth of 12 feet, but this is broken up by huge natural grass flats for prime sight fishing opportunities, as well as deeper channels that house much larger inshore gamefish.

During a license year, one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed Red Drum Tag and one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed Bonus Red Drum Tag. Any fish retained under authority of a Red Drum Tag or a Bonus Red Drum Tag may be retained in addition to the daily bag and possession limit as stated in this section.

Offshore boats are generally much larger than inshore boats, and may need to be moored in a marina. They are sturdily constructed so they can brave the weather and water conditions encountered in open waters. Though they differ in design and purpose and prices vary widely they are generally expensive to build and maintain. Most offshore recreational fishermen charter boats rather than own them. It is often a pastime of the affluent, and there is a demand for charter boats equipped and catered to luxurious excess.

Before purchasing a recreational saltwater fishing license or permit, please make sure you understand what qualifies as Florida residency and whether you really need a license or permit based on the exemptions.

For diverse fishing opportunities, you can’t beat Fort DeSoto County Park. Start with the Gulf Pier stretching more than 1,000 feet into the Bay near the open waters of the Gulf. A strong tidal current attracts bait fish, which in turn bring in the big fish — everything from king mackerel to tarpon and sharks. (You’re also likely to see at least a couple of dolphin frolicking nearby.)

Towerboaters will want to pay particular attention to clearance, and stay alert for the sudden lift of waves. You might have plenty of room while sitting still, but let a big boat or ship send 3-foot swells under your boat and you’ll run out of space in a hurry.

Tidal movement affects just about every type of saltwater fishing venue except the blue waters offshore. In order to optimize your angling success, it is vital to use the changing of the tides to your advantage. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to arrive at your chosen fishing destination at least an hour before the high tide is scheduled to peak, and plan to continue fishing for at least another half hour thereafter.

As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf.

  1. Near the end of the pier, Kevin Chiem is using a sabiki rig to catch greenbacks for bait. Chiem, 30, is a Skyway pier regular. He travels from Tampa at least once a week to see what’s biting in some of the most active water a Tampa Bay fishing pier has to offer.
Not only is fishing during the night convenient, it also makes sense. Most species are nocturnal and prefer to feed when the sun comes down. This rings especially true during the hottest months of the year.

My girlfriend and I booked 4 hour charter with Captain Anthony on Wednesday. We were on fish the whole time. Hooked and landed many large snook. So many we skipped catchin fish we could have had for… lunch to stay on the jumping hard fighting fish he put us on! Anthony was very personable and friendly and knew his stuff. Being a long time fisherman I couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience and we will definitely be back to catch more with this charter See More
