Debris from the old bridge was put in the water to form a reef. Because it was a bridge, both piers sit high above the water. It makes for spectacular views not only of the deep blue water, but of the new Skyway bridge just to the east.

Just as we chronicled the Average Angler’s quest to complete the elusive Florida Bass Slam, we would also like to see your best bass catches. Send us pictures of you and your best catches and we’ll showcase them right here!

Sheepshead have already started to infiltrate the flats, shell bottom creeks, canals, and rivers. Most of the fish that we have been seeing are on the smaller side, but normally this means that the deeper rock piles and edges will be holding the big ones. The two locally known reefs, “Bahia Beach & Port Manatee” are great places to start looking for the bigger convicts. Deep water canals and bridges will also be holding them. Look for oysters or rocks and focus on fishing around structure. As far as the rig goes, I like about 24” of 15-20lb Ohero fluorocarbon leader paired with a No. 1 live bait hook. Depending on the depth and current, I will use Joyfish Split Shot weights to gently get the bait to the bottom. Live or cut pieces of Shrimp will work just fine, or if you can get some fiddler crabs they can’t resist them. The key to catching Sheepshead is “feeling” the bite. They are known for eating the bait right off the hook. Unless they are pretty excited, the bite is fairly soft and gentle. I always tell my clients, “If you think you got a bite, you did – Set the hook!” Once hooked, they are feisty fish and have tremendous power for their size. Sheepshead must be at least 12” total length to harvest, the bag limit is 15 per person, and they provide excellent table fair.

9. Store the motor in an upright position in adry, well-ventilated area. Select an area with constant temperature to avoid corrosion caused by condensation. Do not store next to furnaces, heaters, etc.

Run shallow-diving plugs like a Bomber Long A, Yo-Zuri or Rapala X-Rap right next to the pilings, where snook and speckled trout chase baitfish. Jigs and baitfish imitators like a D.O.A. TerrorEyz work well in the slack water behind bridge fenders. For mackerel, cast a Clarkspoon rigged with a 1- or 2-ounce cigar weight above the leader. A good rig for landlubbers, the weight hugs the bottom and the spoon flutters up like a fleeing baitfish.

The Nature Coast consists of the area from St. Joseph Sound in Pasco county, up the gulf coast to Ochlockonee Bay in Wakulla county. Along this stretch of coastline, crystal clear spring fed rivers flow into beautiful salt marshes dotted with mangroves. This area also has many wildlife refuges that hold an abundance of fish and bird species. The southern parts of this pristine unspoiled coast, including Tarpon Springs, Chassahowitzka, and Homosassa, are only about a 40 minute drive from the bustling city of Tampa. The Northern area can be accessed from Gainsville or Ocala.

Tampa Bay fishing charters have been catching lots of Snook, a few reds, and limits of trout. The bay fishing is about to get really good as soon as the first cold fronts hit and the fish push into the bay, and for the anglers that will be here for this we will have 50-100 fish days fishing for snook and reds.

The sport fishing charters in Tampa, Fl that take place inshore is what draws anglers worldwide to the area. From backcountry Snook to sight casting tailing Redfish on the grass flats, these charters are always something special.

• Ready To Run: If you’re targeting the bridge big boys—tarpon, sharks, cobia—you may have to run down a fish. You may not have time to pull anchor, so rig a float to your anchor line and simply uncleat the rope and toss the whole deal overboard when go-time arises. After the fight, return to your float and retie your anchor line at your original position.

When the fish are thick, tip a bare jig with a live fiddler crab and it’s pompano fireworks. Pomps may bite one-here-one-there, but more often than not, you’ll have to search several pilings to find the mother lode. Do your looking with jigs and hit the school with fiddlers.

Fintastic Fishing Charters is a Madeira Beach company that leads Tampa area passengers on offshore fishing expeditions. The company’s vessel, which is 34 feet long, meets or exceeds each of the Coast Guard’s safety standards. It is equipped with type-one life jackets, a raft, an electronic monitoring system, a first-aid kit, and a satellite telephone, among other safety features. Interested potential clients may quickly schedule an appointment through the company’s online scheduling system.

If you ever battled a Tarpon before, you know this is one durable trophy fish. Most fights last from 20 to 40 minutes, although you should try and end the struggle as soon as possible. Other than ensuring the fish’s survival, this also helps in avoiding the sharks. The toothy critters are hardly scarce around here.

The plume of tidal flow, accelerated by funneling through the bridge, can move the fish a significant distance from the structure. Similarly, tides move bait schools around and that often influences where predators position themselves.

Like reefs, bridges offer abundant opportunity with lots of room for personal style. However, unlike their submerged counterparts, bridges are easy to locate and you rarely have to worry about finding dive flags on your spot.

My intent was to offer the kind of service that I would expect from a top quality, professional, guide. Sheepshead will be coming into their spawn around the full moon beginning in February. Some of the largest sheepies of the year are usually caught during the next two months. They are a tough catch on artificial lures, but tipping jigs with a small thumbnail size morsel of fresh shrimp can add to your mixed winter bag of fish. You’ll find the bulk of these fish around boat docks and structure, like the many artificial reefs that were made from the rubble of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
