Tampa Bay’s Snook and Redfish bite has been has hot! Inside the bay snook are bunching back up for the spawn, and the redfish are schooled up as well make for some fun fishing. Snook have been averaging anywhere from 20”-30” with a few large biting as well. Redfish have been top of the slot size 27” or even as large as 36” and we are catching them in shallow water 2′ or less. Live bait and Cut bait have both been working well. Trout fishing has also be outstanding, and getting a few for a fresh fish dinner hasn’t been a problem.
Position yourself according to the water’s direction. You may want to sling a bait under the bridge and let it drift back out; other times, the current will help you position a bait at just the right point.

Capt. Anthony booked our afternoon trip on short notice. When we arrived at the ramp 30 minutes early, he was waiting for us and we left the dock immediately for the fishing area. While the fishing …wasn’t hot and heavy for the most part, at no fault of Capt. Anthony. We still managed to catch several snook, a couple sharks and a few catfish. We chose to fish for snook in lieu of bottom fish, which he told us in advance would result to more fish being caught, but maybe not the size we were after. Capt. Anthony was very accommodating and made the trip really fun. I will definitly use him again if we come back to the Tampa area. Thanks Anthony and Joey for the good time. See More
If it swims, it’s in these waters. The Bay provides such a wide variety of aquatic life, it’s not uncommon to bag more than a dozen species on any given outing. The mighty Snook prowls the mangrove shorelines. Schools of tailing Redfish rest on the glassy grass flats. And the notorious Florida Tarpon roam the Bay’s endless passes. Whatever you’re after, it’s never more than a cast away.

The big boy of the bunch, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the mouth of Tampa Bay and links Pinellas to Manatee County. The original Skyway was demolished years ago after a phosphate barge hit one of the main span pilings during a squall. The north and southbound approach lanes were capped and converted into state park fishing piers.

2 At Madeira Beach, “The hogfish bite is still going strong despite the full moon from a depth of 40-60 feet. Deeper offshore, the tuna are thick, but it’s been difficult getting to them with the weather. The snapper bite has been good. The moon has the fish on the move and the good weather has them chewing,” reports Capt. Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina (727-393-1947).
Like reefs, bridges offer abundant opportunity with lots of room for personal style. However, unlike their submerged counterparts, bridges are easy to locate and you rarely have to worry about finding dive flags on your spot.

The first half of February has been hit or miss for inshore fishing. The consistent cold fronts and warmups seem to have the fish confused. The week ahead should be pretty good. The best bite has been midmorning into the afternoon. With temperatures …
I started the month off on vacation fishing in Venice, Louisiana catching Bull Redfish in the 40” range. These fish are hard pulling and don’t give up. Every year I like to make a fishing trip to Louisiana as they have some amazing fishing there. This year has been the toughest year yet, but I was still able to catch some of the big bulls they have!

Other anglers say that inshore fishing is anything within 3 miles of shore, while others say it’s based on the kind of fish you are catching (but I’ve seen people catch pelagics in a few feet of water so this can’t always hold true).
May and June is when tarpon migrate up from the south, chasing schools of baitfish and that’s the best time for you to catch them in Tampa Bay. The hot spots for tarpon are under the bridges during summer months. Try fishing the Sunshine Skyway all summer long when fish are feeding on herring and sardines.

I normally fish fresh water lakes in several states for bass and specs and have enjoyed many years of fishing Lake Erie for walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass. Looking forward to learning the different spices in and around the bay. God bless and happy fishing Al Osborne.
