Fly Fishing Tampa, St Pete Beach, Anna Maria Florida – Spring is in the air! It’s a great time to get out on the water and enjoy some beautiful weather here in Florida. Fly Fishing a good variety of species on the warm flats is happening right now around Tampa Bay from Anna Maria Island north to Homosass more…
I still recall growing up every summer at Ponce Inlet my dad, brother, grandfather, and I would head offshore every chance we had in our 24-ft Wellcraft boat. Even though it was only 24 feet, it had a small cabin, outriggers, and more tackle than you could shake a leg at.
Another fantastic winter species in the Bay area is Flounder. Undoubtedly one of the most unattractive fish, but probably one of the best tasting! This time of year, the Flounder will move in on large sandy areas in big numbers. For flats fishing, target potholes and creek mouths with substantial flow. Use the same rig for Sheepshead but you might want to switch to a circle hook. On the warmer days, a small live greenback or shrimp on the bottom will be best. If you like throwing artificial, try a #313 Gold Glitter C.A.L jig from D.O.A paired with a 3/8 oz Hook-Up Lures jig head. The heavier jig head will keep your bait on the bottom and in the strike zone longer during the retrieve. On the colder days, the fish might not be as active. Try a cut piece of any baitfish or shrimp. Some great areas to look for the “Door Mats” are around the Skyway Bridge, Fort Desoto, and Pinellas Point. The minimum size is 12” total length and the bag limit is 10 per person.
Bridges carry folks from Point A to Point B, but how about Point Sea? You have to get out of your vehicle for that one, but sling a bait under one of these people pathways and you’ll find angling action aplenty. Here’s your quick primer on fishing Tampa Bay bridges.
Tampa Bay has some of the best places to fish in the state – even if you never set foot on a boat. Landlubbers can cast a line from dozens of beaches or bridges (watch for other fishermen and learn the best times and baits from them) as well as multiple piers where fishing is top activity.
Captain Anthony took us right where the fish were biting! Snook where constantly biting, and Captain Anthony was super helpful and knowledgeable about inshore fishing in the area. Would recommend to a…nyone looking for a great inshore fish charter and experience! See More
IMPORTANT NOTES: Our top three picks do not require that you have a Florida saltwater fishing license to drop your line, but you’ll need one almost everywhere else. (Learn more at http://myfwc.com/license/recreational/saltwater-fishing/) Some exemptions apply for children, senior citizens, disabled residents and people who have qualified for federal financial aid. A no-cost license is required for fishing from docks or piers unless the pier itself has purchased a license. Learn more at http://myfwc.com/license/recreational/do-i-need-a-license/
If you ever battled a Tarpon before, you know this is one durable trophy fish. Most fights last from 20 to 40 minutes, although you should try and end the struggle as soon as possible. Other than ensuring the fish’s survival, this also helps in avoiding the sharks. The toothy critters are hardly scarce around here.
It’s been a chilly start to 2018, but the fishing around St Pete and Clearwater Beach has been pretty good. Whether its been inshore off shore there has been plenty of action. Obviously the warmer the better, but my charters have got some nice catches on the coldest of days. Inshore the trout and snook […]

As a friend of mine once said, I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t discovered their passion in life. We all have one inside of us. It’s that activity that brings you immense satisfaction. At seven years of age, I was introduced to fishing and knew it would be a part of my life from there forward. Although I fished whenever the opportunity arose, it would be a long time before I would actually become a guide. I went to high school, then college. Next, I held a variety of sales positions that took me to every state in the US. Then, in late 2005, it was time….time to walk away to spend my working hours doing something that I had always really wanted to do…fish. I pulled the plug to pursue my dream…become a fishing guide in the great state of Florida….arguably one of the best states to fish in the entire United States.
My brother Luke fishes this Rapala X-Rap with and without the red feathers in the back in both fresh and salt water, but depending on where you are fishing (and what species) you can try it with or without.
