Tampa offers inshore, backwater, and flats fisherman shots at redfish, snook, sea trout, black drum, flounder, snapper, and many other local favorites throughout the year. Seasonally, we also get the Tarpon migration and better shots at pelagic species such as mackerel and cobia. Even big game fisherman who love to fight on light will find shots at grouper and sharks to be abundant.
Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.
• Laws: Consult local or Coast Guard authorities for special navigation rules applicable to bridges in your area. The U.S. Coast Guard has relaxed its post 9-11 regulations limiting boat proximity to bridges. Currently, a 100-foot security zone applies to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge’s center span, its pilings, dolphins and rock abutments. All other rules of navigation still apply, but anglers are allowed to fish elsewhere along the Skyway and other area bridges. FS

Since this was my first time fishing this area, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. There is a wide variety of fish, and they are EVERYWHERE. I don’t know how the rest of the year is, but March 2018 was a fantastic trip for me. I caught 20 fish in a 4-hour charter, including four different kinds of fish, and I just finished dinner made from part of my catch.
St.Pete Beach fishing trips have been catch lots of Spanish Mackerel, Pompano, Trout, and Redfish fishing both the grass flats of Ft. Desoto, and just off the beach in front of the the Don Cesar hotel. Fall fishing is heating up and the St. Pete area is great because it the opening between the Gulf of mexico and Tampa Bay, and all the fish moving through the area pass by the area making for great angling opportunities.

The Nature Coast consists of the area from St. Joseph Sound in Pasco county, up the gulf coast to Ochlockonee Bay in Wakulla county. Along this stretch of coastline, crystal clear spring fed rivers flow into beautiful salt marshes dotted with mangroves. This area also has many wildlife refuges that hold an abundance of fish and bird species. The southern parts of this pristine unspoiled coast, including Tarpon Springs, Chassahowitzka, and Homosassa, are only about a 40 minute drive from the bustling city of Tampa. The Northern area can be accessed from Gainsville or Ocala.
Stretching out at around 400 square miles, Tampa Bay is the largest open water estuary system in the state of Florida. It is also considered one of the world’s most productive natural ecosystems. This is due to the fact that this type of estuary is one where saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico and freshwater feeds from all along the coast mix. It is here where several species of gamefish, baitfish, and crustaceans spend their critical stages of development protected from larger open water predators.

January fishing has had consistent with catches of Sea Trout, Sheepshead, Black drum, Pompano, and a few Redfish. We have been fishing in between cold fronts, but when its not blowing we’re fishing! We have mainly been fishing with live shrimp and some artificial lures. If you prefer lures over bait just let me know! Here are some pics from the first half of the month.
