Fall fishing in Tampa Bay produces some nice catches of Trout,Red drum and Snook. This is the time of year that we start fishing the back water creeks and canals. Snook, Red drum and Trout all migrate to these areas as our water temps dip…
In backcountry pockets you can find lurking Snook and Redfish skimming the mud flats. Out front in the grass flats you again can find Snook patrolling the edges of the mangroves, while right behind you massive pushes can be sight casted from tailing Red’s. Finding Flounder near shallow structure is very common, as well as Gator Seatrout working the bait pods just a little further out.
Your typical Tampa Bay fishing trip can begin with casting jigs, live bait, and crank bait around the various bridges that traverse the bay. Fishing there can be rewarded with the famous bait stealer, Mangrove Snapper, which also live around docks, seawalls, and rock piles. Tampa is home to a myriad of charter boats. Whether are looking for a fun day out with your friends and family or for a corporate outing, there are dozens of packages available for you. Go for light tackle action for Redfish, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, and Trout, catch Tarpon on a fly. Bottom fish for Grouper, tasty Snapper or Amberjack. Enjoy trolling offshore for Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi. Whichever trip you have in mind, you will be able to make a great catch possible.
On a particularly good year, the season can last up to 7-8 months. As any angler half worth his bait knows, that’s hardly standard for any Tarpon fishery. Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.

Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.
Always match your hook to the size of the bait that you plan to use; if it is too big it will look unnatural and discourage attention, but if it is too small a striking fish could miss the hook altogether and steal the bait.
Best value for the money. Maximize time on the water. This is a great trip to exercise both patience and energy. Excellent choice for beginners with a desire to learn a lot or the experienced angler wishing to maximize his skills.
Speckled Sea Trout will show up in good numbers as we get through the holidays. The cooler water temps will attract the larger “gator” trout to the shallower grass flats during the warmer parts of the day. My favorite places to target are sandy “potholes” that are peppered throughout any productive area. The nice thing about trout is they will generally take an artificial lure sometimes just as good as live bait. First thing in the morning, I like throwing top water plugs and as the sun comes up I will switch to soft plastics. One of my favorite surface baits is a Zara Spook in the “bone/white” color. On the colder days, a live shrimp will do the trick. Try using a Cajun Thunder Back Bay popping cork if they fish are not active. The sound produced by the popping cork really gets them hunting for the bait. The size limit for Speckled Sea Trout is 15” min, and the bag limit is 4 per person with only 1 fish measuring over 20”.

Preserve the Experience for Others – The only way we can sustain commercial and recreational fishing in the future is to work together. Use a circle hook when fishing to prevent injury to the fish. We like the Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hook, but if you have a barb hook then you can simply crush it with some needle nose pliers. Never keep your catch out of the water longer than you can hold your own breath. The slime that covers a fish protects it from bacteria and infection, so do your best to not remove this slime. Also, don’t forget to practice catch and release, especially during spawning seasons!

Strong pro-ethanol advocates are pushing the Obama Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase ethanol levels in gasoline to 15% (E15). As you may have read in BoatUS Magazine, ethanol at the currently allowed 10% (E10) level has been shown to cause significant problems for some marine engines and boat fuel systems. Tampa Bay is fed by well over a 100 inland tributaries. In these you will find brackish water rivers and creeks that allow for some of the best backcountry fishing action in the state. This also provides temperate waters for game fish to congregate in when water temps change in the bay.
There are several types and designs that can be highly effective when used in saltwater. They include, but are not limited to, hard baits like plugs, poppers and spoons and soft baits such as plastic swimbaits, grubs and slugs. The latter category also includes recently developed biodegradable baits like Berkley GULP!, which incorporate pheromone-based scents that chemically provoke a feeding response in fish.
