Throughout most of the year, the species are caught in very shallow grass flats, up to 3ft. deep. Even though most fisheries go in deep hibernation during the winter months, the tailing Reds of Tampa Bay remain very much active. That said, they usually migrate to deeper waters at this time, normally between 4 and 8 feet.

Bottom fishermen are likely to have their hands full as well. These waters are home to the likes of Red Snapper, Gag Grouper, Cobia, Amberjack, Flounder, Goliath Grouper and plenty of other rock dwellers.

The summer in the Tampa Bay fishery will see highly active Snook, with steady activity for the other flats favorites: Seatrout and Redfish. However, our favorite time of the year also appears now – The yearly Tarpon run. The Tarpon run generally starts in May and lasts until August.

Don’t forget to bring the kids. They are the future of our sport. If they get to go, they will learn to love the outdoors, inshore fishing charters. Remember your camera, you never know what you might hook while fishing in Destin, Florida – The Luckiest Charter Boat Fishing Village in the world!

Take a fishing charter with Capt Matt and you won’t regret it! He’s very professional and knows the Tampa Bay Area waters better than anyone. No matter what the season or fish you want to catch he’ll get it hooked. He starts his trips off with a simple question: Do you want to fish for sport or dinner? Well, that night we ate snook and redfish! A day with Capt Matt is unforgettable whether it’s fishing with buddies or family. Oh yeah, and his boat is awesome!-Vinny Imbro

The plume of tidal flow, accelerated by funneling through the bridge, can move the fish a significant distance from the structure. Similarly, tides move bait schools around and that often influences where predators position themselves.

Plastic is poisoning our planet. There is nearly as much plastic in the oceans as fish and Costa is doing its part to turn the tide. Aside from cleaning up our own, Costa initiated the Kick Plastic Guide Program to help guides and captains find alternatives to single use plastic water bottles. No one wants to live in a plastic sea.

When the fish are thick, tip a bare jig with a live fiddler crab and it’s pompano fireworks. Pomps may bite one-here-one-there, but more often than not, you’ll have to search several pilings to find the mother lode. Do your looking with jigs and hit the school with fiddlers.

The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.

5/18/2017:  I’ve been to a number of fish camps and charter services.  Home Run is the BEST!  The captains will put you on fish and Evie will treat you like family.  Cannot offer a higher Recommendation.  Signage to direct guest off should improve.

The flats are really coming to life in north Pinellas County. Our main focus this time of year is spotted sea trout, though redfish are cooperating and schooling a bit. Snook are also responding to the warm weather, occasionally eating on the falling…

The Bay Pier, which runs 500 feet out in more protected water, is the perfect choice for fishermen with lighter tackle or those more concerned with bringing dinner home. Nearshore species like snook, redfish, trout, pompano and Spanish mackerel abound in these calmer waters.

For most of this month the weather has been great and with great weather brings great fishing. Fishing the waters of St Pete, Madeira and Treasure Island beach my charters have caught, snook, trout, redfish, sheeps head, flounder, grouper, jacks, Spanish mackerel and pompano. All of the fishing this month has been done with shrimp. […]

Warm weather for the past week has led to an increase in feeding activity for inshore fish species. Speckled trout have been venturing out of deep holes and channels and back into shallow water to feed. This has presented a great opportunity to fish …

We have been doing Tarpon Charters in Tampa Bay for many years, we have also fished Boca Grande Pass as well, and our customers know the Tarpon Bite in Tampa Bay is just as good as Boca Grande. See the latest highlights from the C1 team and their fierce competition in the Quest for the Crest where they took 2nd place in the series with $191,000 in winnings. This four-leg sailfish series spanned the Florida coastline from West Palm Beach to Key West while inspiring adventure and drawing world-class anglers to the bluest waters on the planet.

Just don’t dangle your feet over the side, as warmer months find loads of sharks patrolling the pilings. On a particularly memorable outing, we were treated to a glowing green light show as millions of planktonic players erupted with bioluminescence as our boat moved through their masses. The crescendo came under the Gandy Bridge when a line of cruising tarpon suddenly bolted as an honest 12-foot figure passed maybe a rod length from the bow.

Capt. Matt has not only put me on fish every time I have booked a charter – He got me my biggest tarpon ever 150+!!! He is the best Captain I have ever fished with and I recommend him highly. Always a great time and always finds the fish! -John Lashbrook

The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.

Saltwater fishing boats are typically larger and designed for coastal and offshore fishing, such as sport and open fishermen boats, center consoles, and power catamarans decked and rigged for fishing.

Tampa/St. Petersburg fishing guide, Captain Wade Osborne is among the best in the business when it comes to providing world-class light tackle Sportfishing for tarpon, snook, redfish, trout, kingfish and more. • At Homosassa, the best fishing has been in the rivers on live shrimp. Most of the keeper fish are sheepshead and black drum. A few redfish are in the slot, but most are undersized. The tide change has seen the best bite. “The near shore rocks are holding sheepshead, but wind and weather has kept most anglers inshore,” reports Capt. William Toney of Homosassa Inshore Fishing Charters (352-621-9284).

As a case study, consider the four main bridges which span the Greater Tampa Bay region (see accompanying story). Add to this the many smaller bridges linking residential areas, and the area presents an assortment of emergent structures not unlike the many oil and natural gas drilling rigs dotting the northern Gulf.

To truly experience bowfishing in all its glory, many Captains recommend opting for a nightly excursion. While daytime trips  average around 50 shots per ‘angler’, that number can as much as double once it goes dark.
