I’ve found the Paddle Tail to be an essential staple in my tackle box, especially for moving water/current in daytime conditions. I also find it effective when jigging or dead sticking on the bottom. I’ve tried DOA, Slayer, and Matrix Shad brands, and prefer Matrix for the action even if they may not be the most durable (they’re also pretty affordable, you can order them in bulk from their website for something like 30 cents a bait).

4: At Fort DeSoto Park, plenty of pompano along with flounder and sheepshead are being caught around the area. Anglers are catching some real nice keeper gag grouper from the bridge. Spot tail pinfish has been the hot bait on an outgoing tide. The Spanish mackerel bite is good at both the Bay and Gulf Piers and there’s whiting on the beach and in the passes. “Inside the park, there’s been some nice trout caught from the ‘Mud Hole’ area and the snook bite is pretty decent,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).
Cockroach Bay and Bishop's Harbor are both good fishing spots, located in the middle of Tampa Bay. Deeper channels between the islands just outside of Skyway Bridge near the south shore of lower Tampa Bay are also good fishing spots.

Fishing is the most popular recreational pastime in America; it boasts more active enthusiasts than golf, tennis and sailing combined. Saltwater fishing alone draws in nearly 25 million participants nationwide in a single year. Whether it be trolling offshore for big tuna, drifting across a placid bay for flounder or fishing the skinny water of the intertidal flats for redfish and trout, the plurality of venues and fish species available to saltwater anglers can seem virtually endless.
Daily bag is 5 fish except from Nov. 1-30, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken only by pole-and-line; and from December 1-14, when the daily bag limit is 2 fish and flounder may be taken by any legal means, including gigging. Possession limit is equal to the daily bag.

My daughter was able to tag along. Caught numerous species of fish and in good numbers. Also saw plenty if extra… Had a manatee right under the boat, sharks and rays as well. I caught some of the biggest pompano I’ve ever seen with St. Petersburg skipper Capt. Paul Hawkins. Targeting one of the smaller bridges on the Sunshine Skyway’s approach section, Hawkins worked the upcurrent side during an incoming tide and switched to the downcurrent side when we returned later in the day to fish the outgoing water.
