With a second set of controls up in the tower, sight fishing ability is greatly enhanced. The net effect is more time spent fishing where the fish are. The tower also increases the chances at getting a good cast at a roving Cobia, Shark or Tarpon that otherwise might not be seen.
Tampa Bay Fishing waters come in from several locations creating a dynamic inshore fishery. The tidal flows and water flows come together to create amazing differences in the sea floor. At the same time this mix of currents and tides create a highly active fishery with “fish highways.”
The first half of February has been hit or miss for inshore fishing. The consistent cold fronts and warmups seem to have the fish confused. The week ahead should be pretty good. The best bite has been midmorning into the afternoon. With temperatures …
St.Pete beach area been producing good numbers of Tarpon fishing along the beaches and the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The tarpon have been BIG and most of these fish are over 100lbs!!! Tarpon fishing can take some patience to get one on, but once hooked up you are in for the fight of your life. In addition to tarpon there have been decent numbers of snook just off St.Pete beach and blinds pass area. Live bait free lined in the current is a great way to catch these linesiders.
Over the past decade or so, the circle hook has become increasingly popular because it tends to hook up in the corner of the fish’s mouth rather than ending up hooked deep in the gullet, which greatly decreases the chances of a successful live release.

Clearwater Beach fishing has been good just before I left I was catching good numbers of redfish and trout. When I got back mid month we got right back to it with Redfish, Trout, Snook, mackerel, jacks, and many more species fishing the deep grass flats just inside Clearwater harbor and up around St. Joesph sound in Dunedin. Live sardine have been key to our success and they have been abundant, but small. We have even done a couple fly fishing trips lately, and we had no issues catching plenty of fish on the fly! If you want to do a fly trip just let me know.
Anglers (including those 65 and older) fishing in the Gulf of Mexico (excluding Monroe County) from a private boat, who plan to harvest, possess or land specific reef fish need to sign up to participate in the Gulf Reef Fish Survey.
Tampa fishing and its inshore potential have long been renowned way beyond The Sunshine State. These waters are brimming with the likes of Snook, Redfish, and Tarpon during most of the year, with a wide range of smaller Shark species to keep you busy on even the slowest of days. In fact, there’s such a variety of species cruising the Tampa flats year-round, you’d be seriously hard-pressed to find a local fishing guide that recalls the last time he and his guests came back from the trip empty-handed. But don’t take our word for it!
Anglers either use an uptide rod between 9 and 10 feet in length to cast from the boat or a shorter downtide rod between 6 and 8 feet. Lines are usually between 18 pounds and 50 pounds breaking strain dependent on the species of fish being targeted. Reels are usually multipliers, although fixed spool reels are being used more and more. Baits are similar to those used for beach and rock fishing except they are often larger since larger fish are targeted. The species will include all the beach species, but now also include big conger eels and small sharks like tope and smoothhound.
Watch Your Leader – If you’re using a leader then it’s important to keep an eye on the knot area of where your line is tied to your leader. This area and about a foot or two above it tends to get damaged pretty quickly, especially if you’re surf fishing. You’ll want to cut off any bad or frayed areas and retie your leader. Don’t lose a big monster catch because you were too lazy to check your leader knot. And also make sure to use a quality leader, we recommend the Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon Leader.
For most of this month the weather has been great and with great weather brings great fishing. Fishing the waters of St Pete, Madeira and Treasure Island beach my charters have caught, snook, trout, redfish, sheeps head, flounder, grouper, jacks, Spanish mackerel and pompano. All of the fishing this month has been done with shrimp. […]
What a great fishing trip, I was only in town for a couple days to move my son into his dorm , I called last minute , Chet was able to get me on the water and on the fish! My daughter was able to tag along. Caught numerous species of fish and in good numbers. Also saw plenty if extra… Had a manatee right under the boat, sharks and rays as well. Definitely will return for more!!!!
Great list – my only addition would be a yellow bucktail to go along with the white. Don’t know why, but I’ve found that sometimes when the white seems ineffective, the yellow just flat-out kills ’em – spotted weakfish (trout), snook, reds, etc. Used to tie my own, but they aren’t any better than store-bought and probably no cheaper!
