… throughout inter-coastal waterways with spectacular restaurants and wildlife, till we reach the Venice jetty, where we would suit up and head out into the gulf of Mexico to one of our fishing holes..

Sheepshead, another winter bruiser, are best targeted January through March. They can be found underneath the bridges, docks or even on the nearshore reefs. Ranging anywhere from 1-5 pounds, what they lack in size they more than make up for in being positively delicious.

Absolutely, you are more than welcome to keep any fish that you catch, as long as it is in season and meets the legal size requirements. I will fillet and bag your fish and maybe even share some secret local recipes.

Each year, the bait-rich waterways of the Gulf attract a wide roster of pelagics and other predatory fish. Surface feeders such as Kingfish, Barracuda, Permit and Dorado all prosper throughout the summer months. Although live bait is preferred, these drag-stripping machines will rarely resist a fine-looking ‘topwater’ either.
St.Pete beach area has been producing good numbers of Tarpon fishing along the beaches and the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The tarpon have been BIG and most of these fish are over 100lbs!!! Tarpon fishing can take some patience to get one on, but once hooked up you are in for the fight of your life. In addition to tarpon there have been decent numbers of snook just off St.Pete beach and blinds pass area. Live bait free lined in the current is a great way to catch these linesiders.
The latest in Tampa Bay fishing reports from Captain Steve Betz. Spending hundreds of days per year on the waters of Tampa, Captain Steve has some great insight to share about this fishery. You can browse both current and historical data for this fishery right from this page.
An example of this is using a scaled sardine for Snook, I trim the tail, cutting enough so the scaled sardine can’t swim away so fast. I also use the pectoral to hook the scaled sardine (see photo), which not only slows it down, but causes the sardine to fight for its life. Snook can’t resist a scaled sardine hooked this way, even in the summer heat. Go out and try some of these things and let us know how you do.
