Happy New Year everybody. So far this has been a crazy winter. Not only has it been one of busiest winters ever the fishing has been pretty solid as well. 5: Around the Sunshine Skyway and lower Tampa Bay, the gag grouper bite has been real good around the south Skyway area. There’s also lots of nice sheepshead and flounder, along with some mangrove snapper. The snook are still biting, but they’re on the move. The area flats are producing some nice trout and the size is getting better. There’s also a good bite on black drum from 18 to 24 inches, reports Eric Gilbert Skyway Bait and Tackle (941-357-1122).
The biggest difference between inshore and offshore fishing is the depth of the water, with 30 meters of water being an accepted line-in-the-sand acting as the border between the two. When you’re fishing inshore, you’ll usually be within a few miles of shore and, more often than not, within casting distance of it working popular spots like beaches, rocky shorelines, piers, jetties, flats, mangroves and islands with light tackle. Offshore trips that often require a commitment of 12 to 72 hours will take you anywhere from 30 to 130 miles away from the coast. This kind of water warrants larger sportfishing boats equipped with heavier gear and technology like sonar and radio. The techniques used out here are less hands on – until a marlin is trying to steal all of your line – and you may only catch one or two, but hookups can last hours.
On a particularly good year, the season can last up to 7-8 months. As any angler half worth his bait knows, that’s hardly standard for any Tarpon fishery. Does someone you care about suffer from a seemingly unbreakable ‘Tarpon curse’? Bring him to Tampa Bay. He should be completely cured within a day or two.

Fall fishing in Tampa Bay produces some nice catches of Trout,Red drum and Snook. This is the time of year that we start fishing the back water creeks and canals. Snook, Red drum and Trout all migrate to these areas as our water temps dip…
Unless they happened to grow up in or near a coastal region, most young anglers began fishing in a freshwater lake, river, creek or pond. In fact, small rural farm ponds can be excellent places to learn and perfect vital angling techniques like increasing your casting distance and proper lure or bait presentation.
Primarily bottom fishing grouper, snapper, mackerel, shark and other bottom species over and around reefs, ledges, bridges and wrecks. Some times i troll or free line live bait when pelagic species are available. Bottom fishing is fun for novices and experts alike. There are a large variety of species to catch ranging in size from 1 lb. to 350 lbs. Some want to drag you into a hole while others will take off on a dead run for the horizon. There is lots of action and we move to a new spot when the bite slows.

Redfish are schooled up in a few areas of Tampa Bay, ready to put up a fight. When the waters cool off a bit, Snook fishing is just as exciting. 11-16″ Snapper are among the popular catches. Tarpon are also willing to bite once located.
With fishing terms like inshore, offshore, deep sea, big game fishing and more, it can be tough to get a grip on what’s what. In this post we’ll compare inshore versus offshore fishing and help you determine which style best suits you for your next charter fishing trip.

I am looking to know more about inshore fishing. I was unaware that the main difference between inshore and offshore fishing was the depth of the water. It would be good to consider which fish one is seeking and then plan a fishing trip accordingly.
