The real fun occurred when we noticed several brown figures darting through our chumline. Rogers flipped out a pinfish with an ounce sinker and brought a short cobia to the boat fairly quickly, but previous success on this spot told him the real talent had yet to take the stage. We left the rod with a freelined pinner in the transom rod holder and five minutes back into the snapper deal, that big rod doubled with a 25-pounder.

Preserve the Experience for Others – The only way we can sustain commercial and recreational fishing in the future is to work together. Use a circle hook when fishing to prevent injury to the fish. We like the Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hook, but if you have a barb hook then you can simply crush it with some needle nose pliers. Never keep your catch out of the water longer than you can hold your own breath. The slime that covers a fish protects it from bacteria and infection, so do your best to not remove this slime. Also, don’t forget to practice catch and release, especially during spawning seasons!

Like reefs, bridges offer abundant opportunity with lots of room for personal style. However, unlike their submerged counterparts, bridges are easy to locate and you rarely have to worry about finding dive flags on your spot.

Debris from the old bridge was put in the water to form a reef. Because it was a bridge, both piers sit high above the water. It makes for spectacular views not only of the deep blue water, but of the new Skyway bridge just to the east.

The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.

• Dangling Tackle: Popping out from the bridge shadows and running face-first into a dropping hook or sinker is a guaranteed ER visit. Also, an often tenuous relationship exists between those fishing from a bridge and those motoring around it, so remember the courtesy thing and stay clear of deployed lines.

So we put this video together to show exactly how to spool a spinning reel with braided line like a pro because the last thing you want to do is spool your spinning reel up the wrong way and get wind knots.

If you ever battled a Tarpon before, you know this is one durable trophy fish. Most fights last from 20 to 40 minutes, although you should try and end the struggle as soon as possible. Other than ensuring the fish’s survival, this also helps in avoiding the sharks. The toothy critters are hardly scarce around here.

4: At Fort DeSoto Park, plenty of pompano along with flounder and sheepshead are being caught around the area. Anglers are catching some real nice keeper gag grouper from the bridge. Spot tail pinfish has been the hot bait on an outgoing tide. The Spanish mackerel bite is good at both the Bay and Gulf Piers and there’s whiting on the beach and in the passes. “Inside the park, there’s been some nice trout caught from the ‘Mud Hole’ area and the snook bite is pretty decent,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).
Keep Live Bait in Tip Top Shape – If you’re using live bait it’s important to keep it in the best shape possible. Make sure to always keep live bait out of direct sunlight and if you have aquatic bait like minnows then make sure to buy a water bait aerator to keep sufficient oxygen levels. If you don’t have an aerator then make sure that you change the water every 2 hours. Warm water can’t hold as much oxygen as cool water.
Although readily available year round, spring thru fall gives anglers the best chance to limit out on Snook. Their metabolism tends to slow down significantly during the cooler months. While they’ll still blast your plug every now and again, winter is typically better spent pursuing other species (see above!)
