3 At John’s Pass, sheepshead are still all over the John’s Pass Bridge, jetty, and area docks. There are some really nice trout around the edges of the flats near the rocks that are exposed to sunlight warming the water. Also a lot of snook, but they are sluggish with the cold water, Hubbard says.
My girlfriend and I booked 4 hour charter with Captain Anthony on Wednesday. We were on fish the whole time. Hooked and landed many large snook. So many we skipped catchin fish we could have had for… lunch to stay on the jumping hard fighting fish he put us on! Anthony was very personable and friendly and knew his stuff. Being a long time fisherman I couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience and we will definitely be back to catch more with this charter See More
It also may be the world’s most convenient fishing pier. Rather than parking and lugging tackle and coolers, you can drive to where you want to fish and just unload your car. It’s also lit at night, so you can fish during the cooler hours of the evening or early morning. Even in the middle of the day, though, ts location the mouth of the bay means there’s almost always a breeze and it’s easy to put up a tent for shade.
To take advantage of all the fishing possibilities and customer requests, Capt. Anthony trailers his boat and takes you to the best fishing available at the time of your charter. A recreational saltwater fishing license is required for residents and nonresidents to take or attempt to take saltwater fish, crabs, clams, marine plants or other saltwater organisms (other than non-living seashells and lionfish with certain gear).
Identifying productive bridge spots is mostly trial and error, but a few criteria will help you judge a good one. Current always benefits fishing, as it pulls food sources past ambush points—usually on the downcurrent side of pilings.

Extending over 400 square miles and fed by the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the entire bay and its tributaries act as a reliably diverse game fish nursery. This alone is already a feat in and of itself. As any seasoned angler will attest, most top-tier fisheries struggle with maintaining the variety of its celebrated fish stock. Tampa Bay’s massive ecosystem, on the other hand, plays host to pretty much all of the state’s favorite bruisers. When locals say there’s something in these waters for everyone, you better be sure they mean it.

As the weather gets warmer, sometimes it’s just more fun to wade fish. Grab a pair of sneakers and light fishing tackle, then cast into the channels that cut through lush seagrass beds. Be careful not to trample through seagrasses though – they’re critical habitat for almost nearly every fish in Tampa Bay.

Booked a 7a-11a trip with Captain Anthony. We arrived at 6:40 and he had his boat in the water and was all set to go. Anthony is very friendly and easy to talk to. He put us over a reef where we caught silver trout and some sea bass. He then took us to some vacant docks where we caught sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, and multiple sheepshead. Fun trip, will hope to book another trip in the future.
Inshore fishing trips are one of the best things to do in Panama City Beach, FL. Not only do you get to spend a beautiful day out on the water, but you get the chance to fill up your cooler with some great fish to take home.
My favorite bait for sight fishing is the MirroLure Lil John soft plastic stick bait, because its aerodynamic shape lends itself to exceptional casting distance and accuracy. I’ll use ProCure to add scent for added confidence, and prefer this method over Gulp, but as you say it’s mostly all in the presentation!
How to catch: 6-9wt fly rods, typically floating fly lines 8-12′ leader in 8-15# test, sinking flies when tailing, suspending flies when in deeper water, flies with medium strength hooks in sizes #8 to 1/0
Inshore fishing is any fishing that takes place in water up to thirty meters deep. Since the waters are more calm, the requirements for a fishing vessel are less intense, and boats can be very small and basic. In terms of equipment, such as poles, holders, attire, and storage, inshore fishing requires less, as well. Light rods and even small nets can be utilized to catch the large variety of fish that you can find in shallow waters. Some may argue that the downside to this is that, with the lessened hardship, you also lessen the excitement. With less intense boats, gear, and waters, you are more likely than not catching smaller fish. The big trophies — blue fin tuna, shark, and the like — will rarely be found in these waters. If it’s big trophies you are hoping for, offshore fishing may be more your speed.
Large schools of redfish are found swimming through the shallow flats of Tampa Bay during September and October. Bunces Pass has good water flow and features spoil islands and troughs just in the pass with many fine fishing spots for redfish, snapper, trout and snook. The eastern side of Mullet Key offers excellent fishing for redfish.

For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano—all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1⁄4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)
Selecting and spooling up with the right line for the type of fishing that you plan to do is an essential component in successful saltwater fishing. Because of the damage dealt out by constant exposure to saltwater and intense sunlight, it is important to always buy a good quality fishing line and change it often. Stick with the brands sold by major manufacturers and avoid ‘bargains’ on lesser-known products that may fail when put to the test. Losing the fish of a lifetime simply because you momentarily embraced a false sense of economy is a tough one to swallow.
10/9/09 Everyone needs to go here and read this. http://www.sportfishingmag.com/blog.jsp?blogID=300 For those who choose not to believe that the enviro groups have an agenda to stop fishing, pay close attention. For those who don’t believe that EDF, OC, and other enviro groups are working hard in other areas to stop fishing and then will bring that effort home, pay close attention.
“Have a variety of tackle rigged to capitalize on any situation (that) may arise, whether you are an inshore or offshore angler. For example, I’ll have several spinning rods rigged with plain circle hooks, bucktails and a top-water chugger, plus an assortment of dead (squid, ballyhoo) and live bait (pinfish, pilchards, etc.). If we’re running out and spot a cobia, or if we are bottom or drift fishing and a cobia, dolphin or even a sailfish swims by, we have several rods we can quickly get to, and baits; we’ve an excellent shot at catching that fish. The worst scenario is seeing fish pop up and you have nothing rigged to take advantage of it.”
