Matt it was a pleasure having you and your wife Aubrey out on the boat. It was definitely a great 4 hours of fishing. Spring has finally sprung in the Tampa Bay area and you were the first to experience it with me in 2018….More

Tampa Bay has some of the best places to fish in the state – even if you never set foot on a boat. Landlubbers can cast a line from dozens of beaches or bridges (watch for other fishermen and learn the best times and baits from them) as well as multiple piers where fishing is the top activity.

The first half of February has been hit or miss for inshore fishing. The consistent cold fronts and warmups seem to have the fish confused. The week ahead should be pretty good. The best bite has been midmorning into the afternoon. With temperatures …

Tarpon fishing Tampa Bay-style is perhaps the most exciting aquatic adventure in all of Florida. When they migrate up from the south in May and June, you will go chase the jumpy monsters under the bridges. While targeting “the Silver King”, you might also hook into fast and aggressive Spanish Mackerel.

Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.

Blistering Heat = “Good Fishing!” “Air Conditioned Holes “R” Comfort Zone for Fish” When the summer heat rolls into Florida’s waterways, many fishermen find themselves catching more sun and less fish….

Everyone’s favorite bycatch, fishing for Flounder is a year-long festival. This is one species where double digit hook-ups are often considered the norm on a good day. Often joining them on a dinner plate, Pompano is considered a worthy opponent by most veteran fisherfolk. They’re usually scouted along the beaches or near the bridge pilings, depending on the season.

Naturally, Tarpon tops the list for most fly fisherfolk. Most captains recommend using 10-12 weight fly rods, just in case you come across a trophy-sized ‘Poon. If you prefer to use lighter rods, Snook and Seatrout are definitely the go-to species.

If your dream day on the water is casting to and hooking a giant 100lb. + tarpon, or watching a big snook blast a live bait out of the water under the mangroves? Or, maybe stalking redfish in the gin clear grassflats of the gulf or plugging the flats with topwater lures or throwing jigs for large gator trout. Or, possibly slipping over the side of the boat and wading to any of these species in an attempt to sneak up and hook one of our Tampa Bay gamefish while being ultra-close! Or, the ultimate way to beat the heat and book a night trip in the search of feeding snook in the docklights or bridge tarpon at night. These are all different scenarios that play out year after year while fishing Tampa Bay area. Many of my Tampa Bay fishing charters see us catching more than a dozen different species in just a four hour fishing charter! We can fish St. Pete Beach in the mornings for spanish and king mackerel, sharks, cobia, snapper, grouper, and then turn around and fish the Tampa Bay flats for snook, tarpon, redfish, trout, flounder, jack crevalle, and more. All within a few miles and minutes of each other. There’s a lot of exciting options for fishing the Tampa Bay area and I can help you discover them.

Offshore fishing charters typically depart from St Petersburg and Clearwater. These trips offer a unique opportunity to leave the coastline behind and explore the notorious Gulf of Mexico. Game fish aplenty in the waters of the Gulf, with its countless wrecks, reefs, ledges, hard bottoms and copious weed lines.

Captain Greg Doherty is a USCG licensed captain who has a passion for all things fishing. There is nothing that will get your blood pumping than watching a 20 lb snook push “A-Wake” in the shape of a V behind your top water lure, and then hearing the “Drag” start screaming as the fish bolts for the nearest cover…

Near the end of the pier, Kevin Chiem is using a sabiki rig to catch greenbacks for bait. Chiem, 30, is a Skyway pier regular. He travels from Tampa at least once a week to see what’s biting in some of the most active water a Tampa Bay fishing pier has to offer.

There are many different schools of thought about what kind of fishing is better: inshore or offshore. A lot of this has to do with personal preference — whether you prefer to be close to land (or on land) or way out on the wild seas. What kind of fishing you are looking for is also a factor in determining if you want to be closer in or further out. Although very different, both inshore and offshore fishing have their merits, and both make for a great day of fishing, regardless of your personal preference.

My husband, my 12 year old daughter and I booked a 3/4 day fishing trip with capt. Chet and had a brilliant day. We have been coming to Tampa/Clearwater for the last 5 years and have booked various private charters but this trip was definitely the best we’ve had! Capt Chet was very patient and accommodating with our daughter and had her catching fish all day. We stopped over a spot and were constantly catching jack crevalle, trout and mackerel. My husband really wanted to try and catch a tarpon so Chet took us to a spot where he thought was our best chance to catch one but unfortunately we had no luck. We are back in sept and will definitely be booking another trip with Chet!

St.Pete Beach fishing has been providing plenty of action for anglers visiting this area. Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, trout, and sharks have all been around and willing to bite over the last few weeks. Tarpon fishing is starting to get good, the fish were a little late this year, but they are finally here and the bite is getting better daily. Tarpon fishing trips are limited to only one trip per day as it is a full day charter. Snook, Redfish, and Trout are also providing a steady bite on the inshore flats around ft.desoto park. Live sardine have been abundant and the fish are willing to strike. If you have kids the small sharks have been around they they loving them! Give me a call if you want to get out

The summer in the Tampa Bay fishery will see highly active Snook, with steady activity for the other flats favorites: Seatrout and Redfish. However, our favorite time of the year also appears now – The yearly Tarpon run. The Tarpon run generally starts in May and lasts until August.

St.Pete beach area has been producing good numbers of Tarpon fishing along the beaches and the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The tarpon have been BIG and most of these fish are over 100lbs!!! Tarpon fishing can take some patience to get one on, but once hooked up you are in for the fight of your life. In addition to tarpon there have been decent numbers of snook just off St.Pete beach and blinds pass area. Live bait free lined in the current is a great way to catch these linesiders.

Watch Your Leader – If you’re using a leader then it’s important to keep an eye on the knot area of where your line is tied to your leader. This area and about a foot or two above it tends to get damaged pretty quickly, especially if you’re surf fishing. You’ll want to cut off any bad or frayed areas and retie your leader. Don’t lose a big monster catch because you were too lazy to check your leader knot. And also make sure to use a quality leader, we recommend the Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon Leader.
