Our top choice is the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay, which became the world’s longest fishing pier after a 1980 disaster wiped out the center section of the bridge. Depending upon season and how far out you go, the bridge offers a chance to catch everything from snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper and pompano.

Description: dark stripe (variably present) extends from nose to in front of dorsal fin and “lights up” when fish is in feeding mode; no scutes; soft dorsal base less than twice the length of the anal fin base.
St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.
Another tip is to fish the best tidal current times. The strongest tides will be before and after the full and new moon each month. The stronger tidal current brings cooler water, along with higher oxygen levels and forage. You could also try fishing under and around bridges that throw more shade, which in turn keeps the water cooler. Bridges at this time of year are excellent for good size Mangrove Snapper, besides all the other species that hang around them, like Pompano, Black Drum, etc. Deep water docks that have good tidal flow running around them will usually hold fish.

Tampa Bay Fishing waters come in from several locations creating a dynamic inshore fishery. The tidal flows and water flows come together to create amazing differences in the floor. At the same time this mix of currents and tides create a highly active fishery with “fish highways.”

And Pinellas County doesn’t have a monopoly on piers. In south Tampa, Picnic Island and Ballast Point fishing piers can be hot spots. The Ballast Point pier reaches far out into Tampa Bay. With a picturesque view of the downtown Tampa skyline, it has plenty of room for anglers.
We have just got our first cold front here in Florida as I write this report. Earlier this week leading up to the front we had some outstanding fishing for reds, trout and snook! I fished with a few different groups, and had a couple multi boat charters with Capt. Mike Cole, and Capt.Ethan Kiburz. Fishing out of Clearwater beach for most of my charter trips we targeted all three species fishing live baits around islands and docks inshore. We caught several redfish, snook, and trout all on light tackle spinning rods with 15lb test line. Tampa bay fishing was really good as well as we did a few days targeting snook in the back country waters in the bay to avoid the windy weather. Here’s some of the pic’s from this past week’s fishing trips.
“Have a variety of tackle rigged to capitalize on any situation (that) may arise, whether you are an inshore or offshore angler. For example, I’ll have several spinning rods rigged with plain circle hooks, bucktails and a top-water chugger, plus an assortment of dead (squid, ballyhoo) and live bait (pinfish, pilchards, etc.). If we’re running out and spot a cobia, or if we are bottom or drift fishing and a cobia, dolphin or even a sailfish swims by, we have several rods we can quickly get to, and baits; we’ve an excellent shot at catching that fish. The worst scenario is seeing fish pop up and you have nothing rigged to take advantage of it.”
Wonderful day fishing with Captain Steve! He is a great guide and was extremely patient with my 6 year old. It was definitely worth the drive from VA! We had an amazing time and we are already looking forward to doing it again! Will absolutely…More
It also may be the world’s most convenient fishing pier. Rather than parking and lugging tackle and coolers, you can drive to where you want to fish and just unload your car. It’s also lit at night, so you can fish during the cooler hours of the evening or early morning. Even in the middle of the day, though, ts location at the mouth of the bay means there’s almost always a breeze and it’s easy to put up a tent for shade.
Anglers can expect to target Florida’s most sought after inshore species of game fish: Snook, Redfish and Speckled Trout. Other species can be targeted too, though; Our Captains target Mangrove Snapper, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Tripletail and Jack Crevalle.
Tarpon are one of Tampa’s premier Sport Fishing charters species in Tampa Fl. When you hook into a Tarpon, aka The Silver King, on your Sport Fishing bucket list, you will know you have hooked the fish of a lifetime!
The weather is warming up and the abundance of sunshine makes it ideal for sight fishing. You never know what’s crushing the flats! Look for Jack, Redfish, and Tarpon. Sheepshead is in full swing this month to fill the freezers.
