Stretching out at around 400 square miles, Tampa Bay is the largest open water estuary system in the state of Florida. It is also considered one of the world’s most productive natural ecosystems. This is due to the fact that this type of estuary is one where saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico and freshwater feeds from all along the coast mix. It is here where several species of gamefish, baitfish, and crustaceans spend their critical stages of development protected from larger open water predators.

This awesome jerkbait by Rapala (the X-Rap series) is designed for optimal performance in the 3-8 feet depth range. Of course, if you know you will be fishing in shallow water (or if you need a hard lure to get down really low), you will need to try out a crankbait lure with a longer bill to get down deep.

As the weather gets warmer, sometimes it’s just more fun to wade fish. Grab a pair of sneakers and light fishing tackle, then cast into the channels that cut through lush seagrass beds. Be careful not to trample through seagrasses though – they’re critical habitat for almost nearly every fish in Tampa Bay.
At Homosassa, offshore, anglers are catching big kingfish, gag grouper and catch and release amberjack. Inshore, the trout bite has been good, but the redfish have been fair. The inshore rock piles are good for keeper gag grouper, Spanish mackerel, and grunts. “This may all change if the upcoming cold front drops the Gulf water temperatures three to six degrees. Most inshore fish will move back to deeper water in passes, deep-water creeks, and coastal rivers that will hold the warmer water,” said Toney.

St.Pete beach area has been producing good numbers of Tarpon fishing along the beaches and the Sunshine Skyway bridge. The tarpon have been BIG and most of these fish are over 100lbs!!! Tarpon fishing can take some patience to get one on, but once hooked up you are in for the fight of your life. In addition to tarpon there have been decent numbers of snook just off St.Pete beach and blinds pass area. Live bait free lined in the current is a great way to catch these linesiders.

Booked a 7a-11a trip with Captain Anthony. We arrived at 6:40 and he had his boat in the water and was all set to go. Anthony is very friendly and easy to talk to. He put us over a reef where we caught silver trout and some sea bass. He then took us to some vacant docks where we caught sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, and multiple sheepshead. Fun trip, will hope to book another trip in the future.
