December Fishing Report for the Clearwater, Clearwater Beach, St.Pete Beach, and Tampa Bay Area. We have been targeting Trout, Redfish, and Snook for most of December with good results. Live shrimp, Sardines, and Artificial lures have been working. Most days we are just doing half day charters, but a few anglers have been doing full days. Here are some pics from recently.

Inshore Snook, Redfish, and Trout have all been caught on recent fishing charters. Snook season is open and we have been catching slot fish. Snook slot size is 28″-33″. Redfish are getting caught on most charter. We have been free lining live sardines around oyster beds, and cut baiting around docks with good success. Trout fishing is also getting better by the day, and the size of the fish are increasing as they come in from offshore and gather in shallows.
Todd, Its always a pleasure having you on the boat. I wish the Kings would of shown up like they should of but I guess the grouper wasnt to bad of a catch. Congrats on getting your first Triple Tail! Capt. Steve Betz
Spotted sea trout feed mainly on crabs, menhaden, shrimp, mullet and anchovies. Good fishing for spotted sea trout can be found near the mouth of Tampa Bay around Fort DeSoto during the summer months. The best fishing is at dawn or dusk.
Booked a 7a-11a trip with Anthony. We arrived at 6:40 and he had his boat in the water and was all set to go. Anthony is very friendly and easy to talk to. He put us over a reef where we caught silver trout and some sea bass. He then took us to some vacant docks where we caught sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, and multiple sheepshead. Fun trip, will hope to book another trip in the future.

When I’m having difficulty finding wind protection, and/or there’s good tidal flow, I also like to tie on a scented Vudu Shrimp on a Popping Cork. I’ve found Mid Coast Product’s Outcast 4″ and 3″ corks provide exceptional casting distance for casting up current and working it back down, suspending the shrimp anywhere from 18″ to 36″ inches below.

Bait has made its way into the bay and the fish have been eating sardines with violent strikes. Look deep for bait, most of it has been in 20-plus feet of water. A little knowledge of how to read a bottom machine will help you secure the prized sardi…
Run shallow-diving plugs like a Bomber Long A, Yo-Zuri or Rapala X-Rap right next to the pilings, where snook and speckled trout chase baitfish. Jigs and baitfish imitators like a D.O.A. TerrorEyz work well in the slack water behind bridge fenders. For mackerel, cast a Clarkspoon rigged with a 1- or 2-ounce cigar weight above the leader. A good rig for landlubbers, the weight hugs the bottom and the spoon flutters up like a fleeing baitfish.
All together, Tampa Bay Charter’s fishing captains have nearly 90 years of not just local fishing experience but actual CHARTER FISHING experience in Tampa Bay! And, all of the listed captains have been fishing Tampa Bay waters well before deciding to guide others to these exciting sport fish. These years of experience make a huge difference in you having a successful and exciting Tampa Bay fishing charter. Tampa Bay Charter captains are all independent owner/operators and don’t work on or run someone else’s boat. They’re in the business of keeping their clients on the fish and having happy repeat clients for years to come. While fishing with your captain, you’ll benefit from him networking with other captains on the water to assure you’ll be where the bite is on and rods are bent…
Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the “Friendship Trail,” with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges—along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas)—give landbound anglers access to the bounty below.

For diverse fishing opportunities, you can’t beat Fort DeSoto County Park. Start with the Gulf Pier stretching more than 1,000 feet into the Bay near the open waters of the Gulf. A strong tidal current attracts bait fish, which in turn bring in the big fish — everything from king mackerel to tarpon and sharks. (You’re also likely to see at least a couple of dolphin frolicking nearby.)
Trout Picking Up. Redfish returning. – Quite quickly, temperatures went from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm. In just a few short weeks, inshore water temps have moved almost 15 degrees and are currently closing in on the 70 degree mark. Logic would say that fishing must be impro more…

5 Around the Sunshine Skyway and lower Tampa Bay, sheepshead are all over the Skyway Bridge area and the approach bridges. Flounder are pretty solid in the South Skyway area. Spanish mackerel have started to show up at the north and south piers. “The tripletail have moved in thick. Look for them on all the crab pots and markers all the way into the bay,” reports Capt. Shawn Crawford of Florida Sport Fishing Outfitters of Bradenton (941-705- 3160).
Enjoyed all the information in this article. Our trip will be in February 2018. I normally fish fresh water lakes in several states for bass and specs and have enjoyed many years of fishing Lake Erie for walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass. Looking forward to learning the different spices in and around the bay. God bless and happy fishing Al Osborne.
St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.
