The net affect of this weather was that all Tampa Fishing Guides got a whole lot more vacation days than planned over the course of the last month. On the coldest days, sheepshead were the only logical target.  Although good to eat, the cold air and limited species selection kept most anglers off the water anyway. For those who ventured out, fishing shrimp or small crabs up under docks or against bridge pilings was the ticket.

And although there is no one spoon that will always work better than all spoons, it’s tough to wrong with the traditional gold spoon that has been known to attract hits from countless types of saltwater species.

The extensive AA log of shows is diverse and quite unpredictable, From AA‘s sickness for spotted fish in “Spotted Fever” to using chicken wire shark cages in “Shark Island”, the over 200 episodes have brought colorful stories, high seas adventure and unique Florida history to the aqua-tube!

Clearwater Beach is getting ready for Summer vacation! Summer is here and everyone is heading for the beaches including the fish… Snook are out around the gulf beaches gathering up for Spawning season and are quite the fighters once hooked up. Snook season is closed currently, but make great catch and reason action. Redfish have been a around and in good numbers. The high tide has been best to catch these fish, and we have often been fishing for trout and snook while we wait for the tide to get to the right level.

Clearwater Beach fishing has been good just before I left I was catching good numbers of redfish and trout. When I got back mid month we got right back to it with Redfish, Trout, Snook, jacks, and many more species fishing the deep grass flats just inside Clearwater harbor and up around St. Joesph sound in Dunedin. Live sardine have been key to our success and they have been abundant, but small. We have even done a couple fly fishing trips lately, and we had no issues catching plenty of fish on the fly! If you want to do a fly trip just let me know.

Later in the coming month, tides heights will start to improve.  This, coupled with warming waters, will improve local redfishing.  With fish still wanting to get warmer, look for them around oyster bars on the higher tides as well as up on the flats in areas with potholes during the warmer parts of the day.  Until cold leaves for good, generally around the middle of March, redfish will respond best to crustaceans such as shrimp.  When the warm settles in, they’ll eat just about anything.

Tampa Bay Fishing waters come in from several locations creating a dynamic inshore fishery. The tidal flows and water flows come together to create amazing differences in the sea floor. At the same time this mix of currents and tides create a highly active fishery with “fish highways.”

September Fishing has been good! Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard, but didn’t hit Clearwater beach, St. Pete beach, or Tampa Bay. While many people lost power here I was on vacation in Venice,Louisiana catching Bull Redfish! I came home the second week of the month and the Snook, Redfish, trout, mackerel and many others were ready to bite, and the weather has been perfect with no wind or rain!

In backcountry pockets you can find lurking Snook and Redfish skimming the mud flats. Out front in the grass flats you again can find Snook patrolling the edges of the mangroves, while right behind you massive pushes can be sight casted from tailing Red’s. Finding Flounder near shallow structure is very common, as well as Gator Seatrout working the bait pods just a little further out.

“I fished with Captain Jason and can’t say enough good things about him. Jason was timely, professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. We caught a nice amount of fish and Jason took us to different areas to target the fish we wanted to catch.”

Spotted sea trout feed mainly on crabs, menhaden, shrimp, mullet and anchovies. Good fishing for spotted sea trout can be found near the mouth of Tampa Bay around Fort DeSoto during the summer months. The best fishing is at dawn or dusk.

Offshore game fish, like marlin and tuna, can be very large and heavy tackle is needed. Fishing is usually done with sea rods, such as downtide rods, with lines of 30 to 50 pounds and multiplier reels. Baits are the same as for inshore fishing and include squid and whole mackerel as well as artificial lures such as perks. Fishing takes place over reefs and wrecks for very large cod, ling and congers.

Extending over 400 square miles and fed by the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the entire bay and its tributaries act as a reliably diverse game fish nursery. This alone is already a feat in and of itself. As any seasoned angler will attest, most top-tier fisheries struggle with maintaining the variety of its celebrated fish stock. Tampa Bay’s massive ecosystem, on the other hand, plays host to pretty much all of the state’s favorite bruisers. When locals say there’s something in these waters for everyone, you better be sure they mean it.

Fall in Tampa Bay will see the beginnings of Gator Trout, and will also offer another shot at big Redfish. Tailing Red’s will be found throughout the skinnies. Cobia will begin to increase action again on their return migration.

Tampa Bay is world renowned for some of the best light tackle inshore fishing. This region includes the pristine flats of the various bays making up the greater Tampa Bay, along with deep channel cuts leading into the Port of Tampa. Tarpon, the “Silver King,” are plentiful in Tampa Bay. They often weigh more than 100 pounds with some occasionally topping 200 pounds – a real thrill on light pound test line. The Tampa area is also famous for spearfishing. An abundance of large game fish, such as cobia, snapper, kingfish, bonito, mackerel and grouper, can be found in the Gulf waters.
