The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.

Thank you Roland and Sharon for coming. It was great seeing you both again and I hope you will be back the next time you are in Florida for a Tampa Fishing Charter. Take care and have safe travels! Capt Steve Betz

For anglers, this means that Tampa Bay is one of the most productive fisheries in the State. Housing over 200 species of fish, prime habitat, diversified ecological structures, temperate climate, and a plethora of baitfish, Tampa Bay is also a year round active fishery.

Inshore Snook, Redfish, and Trout have all caught on recent fishing charters. Snook season is open and we have been catching slot fish. Snook slot size is 28″-33″. Redfish are getting caught on most charter. We have been free lining live sardines around oyster beds, and cut baiting around docks with good success. Trout fishing is also getting better by the day, and the size of the fish are increasing as they come in from offshore and gather in shallows.

Just don’t dangle your feet over the side, as warmer months find loads of sharks patrolling the pilings. On a particularly memorable outing, we were treated to a glowing green light show as millions of planktonic players erupted with bioluminescence as our boat moved through their masses. The crescendo came under the Gandy Bridge when a line of cruising tarpon suddenly bolted as an honest 12-foot figure passed maybe a rod length from the bow.

Snook clearly represent the class of the inshore game fish. Their speed, strong runs and occasional jumps make them the fish of choice for many Florida anglers. Snook are available year round; however the cooler, winter water temperatures slow their metabolisms significantly and make them a difficult target during our coldest months. A wide range of artificial and natural baits can be used to catch snook. The most commonly used method is live baiting with scaled sardines or “whitebait”. However, be sure to review all current fishing regulations before keeping any Snook as this species is heavily protected. Spring and fall fishing typically takes place along inshore structure…river mouths, mangrove shorelines and residential docks. Come late spring, fish move out to the beaches, gather in larger groups and can be caught in greater numbers. During the hottest months of summer, fish tends to feed best during low light periods and at night.

Vincent, Great question. I did do one charter where I had two customers that wanted to split a charter. I went ahead and made the arrangements for them to fish together with me. Unfortunately for them personality’s clashed between them. It made for a uncomfortable trip for both of them and me. Since that incident I do not any longer mix charters. If you would like to call me maybe I could work something out to accommodate you doing a charter with me or possibly another captain in my net work. Thank you, Capt. Steve 813-727-8843 P.S. I apologize for the delay in response. I just noticed I had the notification for a question this morning.

Another year down! 2017 was a great one. Captains @captcrisminami & @captkennysmith appreciate each and everyone of you for your constant support. Thank you to our clients who continually allow us to do what we love to do! We thank you and Happy New Year! ??? #inshoresociety #happynewyear

Capt Steve hit the spots where the fish were. We probably caught about 30 fish total – trout, ladyfish, sheepshead etc… with 6 keepers. He does everything and is a very good captain. I Highly recommend his service, the trip was very enjoyable. I certainly…More

The piers are closed through May 5 for renovation. When they reopen, there is no charge to fish from them, although there is a $5 per car entry fee into the park. They both have bait shops, concession stands and restrooms.

Get your dose of Redfish when the fishing is still hot! The Snook bite is consistent on the outgoing tide with 20 to 24 inch class. Sheepshead and Mangrove Snapper are around the bridges and on the rock pile.

The original bridge was destroyed when the freighter Summit Venture collided with a column of the bridge during a storm on May 9, 1980. In 1992, the center spans of the old bridge were demolished and the remaining sections on the Pinellas and Manatee county sides were converted into piers. The south Skyway pier is the longest fishing pier in the world.

One of the most exciting times of year here is the annual Tarpon migration. Tampa Bay fishing for Tarpon is second to none, on both spin and fly tackle. With the migration starting up in May, the charter boat spots fill up quick. Let Flats & Bay Fishing Charters schedule your day and get you on these fish!
