NOTE: Many marine species are managed on a coast-wide basis with seasons and limits required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Those regulations must then be approved by our state’s Marine Fisheries Council. The Council usually addresses these issues at their March meeting with the management measures becoming effective in mid- to late April or early May. The Marine Digest is normally published in May; the 2017 edition will be available in July. Regulations remain in effect until changed.
5: Around the Sunshine Skyway and lower Tampa Bay, the gag grouper bite has been real good around the south Skyway area. There’s also lots of nice sheepshead and flounder, along with some mangrove snapper. The snook are still biting, but they’re on the move. The area flats are producing some nice trout and the size is getting better. There’s also a good bite on black drum from 18 to 24 inches, reports Eric Gilbert Skyway Bait and Tackle (941-357-1122).
You can now subscribe to an electronic mailing list and receive information from the DEC Division of Marine Resources concerning updated fishing regulations, upcoming fishery meetings and other current events concerning the local fishing industries. Clearwater Beach has been packed with both people and Snook! Snook have made there annual visit out the the gulf beaches and passes to spawn. The snook have been stacked up together and have been eating live grunts on both incoming and outgoing tide. Sea trout have also been hanging in the passes and just off the gulf beaches. Shark fishing has also been productive on recent charters. We have been catching black tips, bonnet heads, Atlantic sharp noises, most have been in the 2-5′ range, sharks offer great table fair!
Although high-grade conventional saltwater reels and rods provide the necessary backbone for big game anglers fishing offshore, those who are just beginning to fish in saltwater are better off starting out with a quality medium weight spinning combo. Unless you are already well versed in the art of casting a conventional reel, a spinning reel will help you to cast further while avoiding the frustrating backlashes and bird’s nests that are inherent with conventional gear. A quality spinning combo that is rated for 10 to 25 test line will also cover you in a variety of different venues from surf and pier fishing to drifting in bays or intertidal estuaries.
For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano—all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1⁄4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)
8 In the north end of Tampa Bay, “The sheepshead bite remains good. Rock piles, oyster bars, bridge pilings, and anything with barnacles are holding them. I’m fishing for them with pinched shrimp on a jig head,” reports Capt. Jake Whitfield Florida Outdoor Adventures (813-997-5980). Black drum up to 24 inches are also mixed in with the sheepshead. Trout are biting shrimp fished under a popping cork in deeper water of the creeks. Some “rat” redfish are also in the same areas, Whitfield says.
Anglers may take two red snapper daily from Gulf waters during the open season; however, the captain and crew of for-hire vessels in the Gulf may not keep the recreational bag limit. The minimum size limit for recreational red snapper in the Gulf is 16 inches total length.
