For a natural chum job, scrape the pilings to crush and release barnacles or mussels. The scent stimulates sheepshead, drum, redfish and pompano—all likely recipients of cut shrimp dropped into the scent zone on 1⁄4-ounce jigheads. (Light hooks and splitshots also work, but jigheads effect a more streamlined presentation that drops quicker in current without spooking fish.)

St.Pete Beach has also been providing similar action to Clearwater beach, and the Redfish have been providing consistent action for charter trips we have done lately. St. Pete is a great area to fish out of because of the action at the mouth of the bay which means every fish that goes in and out of the bay have to pass St.Pete beach going between Egmount Key and Ft.Desoto Park, if you would like to fish any of these areas specifically just let me know.

Tampa Bay is Florida’s largest open-water estuary, extending over 400 square miles and forming coastlines of Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas counties. The freshwater sources of the bay are distributed among over a hundred small tributaries, rather than a single river. The bay bottom is silty and sandy, with an average water depth of only about 12 feet.
Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the “Friendship Trail,” with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges—along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas)—give landbound anglers access to the bounty below.
I have fished for tarpon from Boca Grande to the Keys, however I do not think there is a better fishery than what is here in the Tampa Bay and Sarasota area. That coupled with the high quality of this group of guides should open up the area to many more who are not aware of it.
Departing from historic Ft. Desoto Park Boat Ramp we pass by Mullet Key on our way out of Bunces Pass and along the South end of Shell Key into the Gulf of Mexico. Bunces Pass usually has small groups of Dolphins roaming around feeding on schools of bait fish that can be seen. On our way to Egmont Key bait schools and feeding birds can be seen Spring through Fall.
