Each year, the bait-rich waterways of the Gulf attract a wide roster of pelagics and other predatory fish. Surface feeders such as Kingfish, Barracuda, Permit and Dorado all prosper throughout the summer months. Although live bait is preferred, these drag-stripping machines will rarely resist a fine-looking ‘topwater’ either.

Recreational fishermen usually fish either from a boat or from a shoreline or river bank. When fishing from a boat, or fishing vessel, most fishing techniques can be used, from nets to fish traps, but some form of angling is by far the most common. Compared to fishing from the land, fishing from a boat allows more access to different fishing grounds and different species of fish.

The original bridge was destroyed when the freighter Summit Venture collided with a column of the bridge during a storm on May 9, 1980. In 1992, the center spans of the old bridge were demolished and the remaining sections on the Pinellas and Manatee county sides were converted into piers. The south Skyway pier is the longest fishing pier in the world.

The big boy of the bunch, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the mouth of Tampa Bay and links Pinellas to Manatee County. The original Skyway was demolished years ago after a phosphate barge hit one of the main span pilings during a squall. The north and southbound approach lanes were capped and converted into state park fishing piers.

Inshore Slams have been the norm over the last few weeks. An inshore slam is when you catch a snook, trout and redfish in the same day. Fishing the flats, docks and oyster beds in St Pete Beach my charters have been catching all tree species. Live and cut bait has been working, but we […]

IMPORTANT NOTES: Our top three picks do not require that you have a Florida saltwater fishing license to drop your line, but you’ll need one almost everywhere else. (Learn more at http://myfwc.com/license/recreational/saltwater-fishing/) Some exemptions apply for children, senior citizens, disabled residents and people who have qualified for federal financial aid. A no-cost license is required for fishing from docks or piers unless the pier itself has purchased a license. Learn more at http://myfwc.com/license/recreational/do-i-need-a-license/

Even if there is a good reason why Snook and Redfish make it to the top of your angler’s list, you simply cannot miss the opportunity to catch Trout, one of the tastiest fish. Those shallow flats inhabitants are easy to catch and make great table fare, just like Sheepshead and the bottom-hugging flatfish Flounder. Flounder can be found relatively close to the shore, hiding in the sand of moving waters around passes and inlets. Off the shore, you can find them near reefs and shipwrecks. Nibblers Sheepshead also hang out there. You can always count on Sheepshead bite during the winter!

Tampa Bay bridges produce year-round but the popularity increases as the thermometer rises. Fish and anglers beat the heat by sticking close to a bridge’s shaded waters. When thunderstorms threaten, a bridge is your umbrella and windbreak. No need to run back to port—just tuck behind the downwind side and ride out the blow.

The flats and back bays are abundant with Redfish. When the tide is low, you can see their spotted tails on top of the water. Aren’t they just perfect for sight fishing? If you know where to look, you can also catch your late-season Tarpon.

St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.

Captain Greg Doherty is a USCG licensed captain who has a passion for all things fishing. There is nothing that will get your blood pumping than watching a 20 lb snook push “A-Wake” in the shape of a V behind your top water lure, and then hearing the “Drag” start screaming as the fish bolts for the nearest cover…
Other anglers say that inshore fishing is anything within 3 miles of shore, while others say it’s based on the kind of fish you are catching (but I’ve seen people catch pelagics in a few feet of water so this can’t always hold true).
The piers are closed through May 5 for renovation. When they reopen, there is no charge to fish from them, although there is a $5 per car entry fee into the park. They both have bait shops, concession stands and restrooms.
