The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.

As the weather gets warmer, sometimes it’s just more fun to wade fish. Grab a pair of sneakers and light fishing tackle, then cast into the channels that cut through lush seagrass beds. Be careful not to trample through seagrasses though – they’re critical habitat for almost nearly every fish in Tampa Bay.

Had a busy second week fishing both the bay and Clearwater harbor area. Fishing was good with Redfish, Trout, Snook and Triple tail being caught. Early in the week I fished out of Safety harbor and we fished for snook and trout. Did good on both, middle of the week I fished for triple tail out of Dunedin Marina, and we started the day by running south along the stone crab traps looking for Triple tail. We ran down from Clearwater beach to sandy key, and made our way down to Johns pass and St.pete beach where we caught a 6 triple tail with 2 shorts, 2 just legal, and 2 jumbos. I finished off the week fishing back over in Dunedin Clearwater area catch trout and a few redfish.

Seeing large groups of pelicans diving and catching baitfish in warmer, shallow water is a sure sign spring conditions are approaching. The appearance of quality baitfish will spark a feeding frenzy that should steadily improve flats fishing for fly …

Snook clearly represent the class of the inshore game fish. Their speed, strong runs and occasional jumps make them the fish of choice for many Florida anglers. Snook are available year round; however the cooler, winter water temperatures slow their metabolisms significantly and make them a difficult target during our coldest months. A wide range of artificial and natural baits can be used to catch snook. The most commonly used method is live baiting with scaled sardines or “whitebait”. However, be sure to review all current fishing regulations before keeping any Snook as this species is heavily protected. Spring and fall fishing typically takes place along inshore structure…river mouths, mangrove shorelines and residential docks. Come late spring, fish move out to the beaches, gather in larger groups and can be caught in greater numbers. During the hottest months of summer, fish tends to feed best during low light periods and at night.

St.Pete Beach fishing has been providing plenty of action for anglers visiting this area. Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, trout, and sharks have all been around and willing to bite over the last few weeks. 6 At Anna Maria, trout are hanging on the edges of the flats adjacent to deeper water of the Intracoastal Waterway in Sarasota Bay. Schools of Spanish mackerel are mixed in with schools of ladyfish in areas holding fry bait. Redfish and black drum are holding in the potholes. “The redfish are lower slot size, but the black drum are good size, some are pushing 32 inches,” Crawford says.
