Tampa Bay’s Snook and Redfish bite has been has hot! Inside the bay snook are bunching back up for the spawn, and the redfish are schooled up as well make for some fun fishing. Snook have been averaging anywhere from 20”-30” with a few large biting as well. Redfish have been top of the slot size 27” or even as large as 36” and we are catching them in shallow water 2′ or less. Live bait and Cut bait have both been working well. Trout fishing has also be outstanding, and getting a few for a fresh fish dinner hasn’t been a problem.

4 At Fort DeSoto Park, the sheepshead bite is still pretty good around the bridges and any area with structure. Lots of “rat” redfish are still being caught around the park. There are also a lot of small trout up to 14 inches being caught. “There’s a good amount of snook around, but the cold weather has made them lethargic. They’ve got lockjaw,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson, of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).

Cockroach Bay and Bishop's Harbor are both good fishing spots, located in the middle of Tampa Bay. Deeper channels between the islands just outside of Skyway Bridge near the south shore of lower Tampa Bay are also good fishing spots.

At the end of the day, fishing in Tampa Bay is always more than just the sum of its parts. The bay supports a vibrant ecosystem abundant with wildlife, endemic species and all sorts of unique natural wonders.

Similarly, the original Gandy Bridge now serves as a biking/pedestrian route called the “Friendship Trail,” with lower catwalks extending from either end. The structures adjacent to the Gandy and Skyway bridges—along with dedicated fishing lanes on smaller spans like the Tierra Verde Bridge (south Pinellas)—give landbound anglers access to the bounty below.

• Dangling Tackle: Popping out from the bridge shadows and running face-first into a dropping hook or sinker is a guaranteed ER visit. Also, an often tenuous relationship exists between those fishing from a bridge and those motoring around it, so remember the courtesy thing and stay clear of deployed lines.

The hooks that are usually employed for saltwater application include the J hook, the live bait hook and the circle hook, each of which has its own specialized application. The J hook can either be a ‘baitholder’ with a few barbs on the shank or a standard J with a smooth shank. These are best for fishing with chunk or strip bait and allow you to hook the bait multiple times in order to keep it secure.

NOTE: Many marine species are managed on a coast-wide basis with seasons and limits required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Those regulations must then be approved by our state’s Marine Fisheries Council. The Council usually addresses these issues at their March meeting with the management measures becoming effective in mid- to late April or early May. The Marine Digest is normally published in May; the 2017 edition will be available in July. Regulations remain in effect until changed.

Clearwater Beach is getting ready for Summer vacation! Summer is here and everyone is heading for the beaches including the fish… Snook are out around the gulf beaches gathering up for Spawning season and are quite the fighters once hooked up. Snook season is closed currently, but make great catch and reason action. Redfish have been a around and in good numbers. The high tide has been best to catch these fish, and we have often been fishing for trout and snook while we wait for the tide to get to the right level.

This has been a cold year thus far as fronts have blasted the Tampa Bay area. Now things are beginning to warm up, and the transition from winter to spring begins. Every warm day takes us one step closer to some awesome fishing. As water temperatures…

What a great fishing trip, I was only in town for a couple days to move my son into his dorm , I called last minute , Chet was able to get me on the water and on the fish! My daughter was able to tag along. Caught numerous species of fish and in good numbers. Also saw plenty if extra… Had a manatee right under the boat, sharks and rays as well. Definitely will return for more!!!!

Clearwater beach area we have been targeting Snook, Redfish, and Trout and the action has been consistent with a few snook being caught, tons of trout, and good numbers of Redfish! We have typically been targeting snook in the early moring before the water gets to hot, then moving on to the trout and redfish depending on the tides.

We have been doing Tarpon Charters in Tampa Bay for many years, we have also fished Boca Grande Pass as well, and our customers know the Tarpon Bite in Tampa Bay is just as good as Boca Grande. Actually, most that have fished both Tampa Bay & Boca Grande will tell you the bite in Tampa Bay is even better with more opportunities to actually Land a Giant Tarpon.

We have four different charter fishing boats for landing fish. Depending on what type of trip you book will depend on which Vessel is best suited for that type of trip. For Deep Sea Fishing we have our workhorse 37′ Spectre Fishing machine “Island Lure”! Inshore and Tarpon Fishing we have a 24ft Mako, a Skinny Water Machine. One thing that our boats have in common is that each is outfitted with the latest Safety Gear and the best electronics.  As for our Crew, we have the areas most Experienced, Most talked about experts in Capt. John Fidi and Capt. Gene Maxwell. Nobody in the Gulf of Mexico can match our Tournament Records. Not even close.

Granted, there will be times when you won’t need a leader line while inshore fishing (like if the water massively dirty and dark with no structure around), but 90% of the time you will be better off using a leader while inshore fishing.

Throughout peak migration (May-July), most Tarpon range between 80 and 140 pounds. Still, you’ll probably hear of folks joining the coveted ‘200 club’ every now and again. If you’re specifically booking a Tarpon charter, expect an average of 2-7 hookups per trip. Days with more than 10 hookups are certainly not unheard of, though. In the end, it all depends on your own expertise and a lil’ bit of luck.

Trout Picking Up. Redfish returning. – Quite quickly, temperatures went from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm. In just a few short weeks, inshore water temps have moved almost 15 degrees and are currently closing in on the 70 degree mark. Logic would say that fishing must be impro more…
